Printer doesn't show up when plugged in via USB, Canon i860

From all the threads it looks like printing with leopard is a disaster. I plugged my canon i860 into my macbook via usb and it doesn't even show up when I go to add printers. I downloaded the driver's from canon and it still doesn't show up as an available printer. I plug it into my emac and no problems which is running panther.

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The drivers for this printer are included with Leopard, so you should not have had to download any drivers. Did you install the Canon drivers when installing Leopard? I'd rip out the Canon drivers you just installed and then reinstall the Canon drivers from the Leopard dvd. Then try adding the printer, though it should show up if it's properly connected and the drivers are there.

Hope this helps.

Try going to the "print and fax" system preference pane and "control click" in the "Add" window. choose "reset" from the menu which comes up. If that doesn't work try printing from a program and when the print dialogue window comes up it will not list any printers. Click add and the computer will search for attached printing devices. I did this in a shred network environment and after clicking add I was presented with a list of all the print type devices on my network. I selected one device at a time and clicked add and after a short wait I was in business.

THe computer had leopard installed when I got it. It's a new macbook. It shouldn't be this complicated!

No, it shouldn't. But it also wasn't necessary to install any drivers. That's why you should reinstall the Canon drivers from the Leopard dvd.

The reason I installed the drivers is I first was trying to print wirelessly like I did with my old ibook G4 without any problems. When I couldn't get the shared printer to show up, I then read the documentation from apple tells you to make sure both computers are running the same drivers. So I installed the newest drivers which are for leopard from canon's site, but still no luck. The driver from Canon has the same version number as the one listed in the leopard documentation, so it shouldn't matter.

I tried the reset already. No luck there. I'll mess with it more this evening. Hopefully 10.5.2 is close to release!
