No Audio from Powerbook G4

I just bought a secondhand 17" PB G4 1Ghz with 1Gb RAM . The machine looks brand new and works perfectly apart from there is no audio output either through the internal speakers or via the headphone jack . I must emphasise the machine is completely unmarked , with no signs of having been dropped and none of the screws in the casing look to have been tampered with .

The vendor did point this fault out before I bought the unit and this was factored into the price .

Once I got the machine home , on Tuesday night , my first checks were for simple hardware problems - there is a click from the speakers on startup and the same via headphones if plugged in .

Looking at the sound pane of system prefs shows internal speakers , built in audio as the only option under the Output tab ; Under the sound effects tab , play alerts and sound effects through : the box shows internal speakers but is greyed out and cannot be selected despite having ticked and unticked every box .

I did a complete erase of the hard drive and then a clean installation of Leopard - no change .

Somewhere along the line I decided to try resetting the PRAM - pressing Cmd Opt P R just after the power button made no obvious difference , but if these four keys are held down while pressing the power button a first and then second startup chime is heard , however the computer reverts to silent mode after that .

This to my mind at least proves the internal amplifiers and loudspeakers are working .

Since the PRAM reset buttons had some effect , I wondered if there might be a problem with the RAM . I took both RAM sticks out and tried each one singly and in each slot - still no sound although the system profiler recognised each RAM stick in each slot - I guess it is unlikely both are faulty and particularly since the computer functions perfectly in every other aspect - I am currently typing this on it just now , I can run Photoshop CS3 , Lightroom , Final Cut Express ( without sound ) and all my other apps on it without problems .

I bought the computer primarily to use for Photographic work out in the field and for internet and email - this it will do in its present state and for half the cost of the cheapest new MacBook I am happy enough . It would be nice , though , to have sound for iTunes and for occasional video editing ( I also have a dual 2.5ghz Powermac G5 in the house where I already do video work so I don't have a desperate need to edit on the Powerbook and I can use my iPhone for music on the move ) .

Earlier tonight , I dropped by the Genius Bar of the Glasgow Apple Store and told this story , but there were no simple suggestions . There was a suggestion it might be the logic board ( and it may be ) but I'm not ready to lay that much out on the machine yet ( especially not two weeks before Christmas ) . I may yet consider this option after eliminating all less costly options as even then it would only have cost about the same as a basic MacBook or about half the price of a 17" MBP . The big , bright , matte finish 17" screen is a plus point for photographic work and much preferable to a smaller , glossy screen .

Just thought I'd post here to see if anyone can suggest anything or has seen these symptoms before ?

James , not so far . I haven't had time to look much further into it .

I have discovered there is a separate audio board and a ribbon cable connecting it to the main logic board - my first step will be to open up the machine and check this is properly seated . I also notice the ribbon cable runs over the top of the hard drive ( which gets hot ) and will check it for heat damage .

Beyond that , I think I will look for a cheap 'spares or repairs' machine to get another logic and/or audio board out of it as that will be the most economic way to fix it . There are plenty of machines with broken screens/badly damaged cases etc. on ebay quite regularly so it should not be too hard to pick one up .

I'll post again when I have something new to report .

Derek,

Opening it up and making sure the ribbon cable is properly seeded is a good idea. If the hard drive had ever been upgraded you have to remove the audio cable in order to do it. It is very fragile and must be seeded perfectly for it to work. I doubt the drive temperature would have any affect on the cable. The good news, is if you're willing you can replace that cable for like $15.

When you have it opened up get a very bright light and good magnifying glass and look at the connectors on the boards. Make sure there is no damage from being forced on incorrectly. If it looks good, check the connector ends of the cable. They're very small so you'll have to look very closely.

The other option would be replacing the sound card. I believe that can be replaced, but I'm not sure. Check out ifixit.com for more info. on the procedure and to order the parts.

Good luck!

*OK I'm ******.*

Same problem: NO AUDIO, Only after the last Security UPdate to Leopard.

NOW, I just bought ANOTHER Powerbook G4 and Leopard, to solve this problem with my OTHER Powerbook G4 that this happened to, but using Security Update to TIGER!!! Only in THAT case, it seemed to have crashed the entire ATA bus...upon restart. (Believe me, I have been through every online thread, and have done everything, from unix level resets to diagnostics...and everything points to LOGIC BOARD shot!

THIS time, with the nice new leopard system that seemed to be working fine until the Security Update, there was immediatly NO audio upon restart....AND the computer won't start up from the Internal Drive (like last time!!) but it started up off of an external (clone) that did not have the Security Update, but STILL with NO AUDIO!!!

It seems that, not once, but TWICE, Apple's Security Updates are permanently DAMAGING PowerBook G4s!!!!

*DO NOT INSTALL THE APPLE SECURITY UPDATES (ANY OF THEM) on a Powerbook G4!!!* Until SOMETHING is offered as a cure for this.

Now, can anyone suggest anything reasonable that does not require taking the computer apart? Because this happens when updating SOFTWARE. Do these updates from Apple try to reset FIRMWARE or something, that is not backward compatible with the PowerPC Powerbooks???

As of now, I am multimedia developer WITH 2 ruined Powerbooks!!!!...unless someone can suggest something, hopefully by Christmas.

Sorry for the tone, just SO frustrated now.

Hello all,
I have noticed that sometimes after a restart, my 17" Powerbook will not recognize any present audio devices after upgrading to Leopard (although the startup chime does sound). The volume icon in the top task bar is a blank spot, and system preferences audio pane's list is empty. However, every time this has happened another restart resolves the issue. I realize your issues appear to be more severe but I thought I would chime in as a variation of the same problem (and I hope it doesn't get worse).

Hmm , interesting .

The 17" PB I just bought had recently had Leopard installed on it , along with iLife 08 - that was how I got it and I don't know the history before that , although the machine is a 'minter' , looks brand new , completely unmarked and works perfectly apart from this one issue . The eBayer I bought it from had , like myself , a 100% positive feedback rating well into 3 figures and did point out this issue in his listing - I was just counting on it being easy to resolve and got the machine for a fair price (just over £300) taking this into account .

The machine may have had these security updates before I got it , I just don't know . Thinking it might have been a software issue , I did a complete erase and reinstall back to the original version of Tiger - this made no difference . I then put Leopard back on , along with other apps I use regularly and have run software update a few times to get everything as up to date as possible .

I was looking for a firmware download for the machine to see if I could reset this but could not see anything available .

I did find online disassembly instructions and was pleasantly surprised to find that the machine is remarkably easy to open up and everything is very accessible - there is a separate sound board running down the left side of the machine , connected to the logic board by a ribbon cable which did not look like it had ever been disturbed : I unplugged this , examined it for any signs of damage (there were none) and plugged it back in , hoping for the best .

The machine does now make a few more noises than before : clicks , pops , buzzes from time to time , particularly when operating the volume keys , but there are still no sounds and the 'internal audio' option in the sound preference pane is still 'greyed out' .

I had more or less discounted the software/firmware side of things and was planning to spend some time during the holidays looking more closely at some of the tracks/solder joints on the boards . In the light of the recent post , I'll keep an open mind on this now .

On the hardware side , the audio board and ribbon cable are not too expensive and possibly worth trying first , otherwise there are people out there selling used logic boards / faulty machines for spares/repairs so it might be worth going down this route without spending too much on it .

At the end of the day , I use the machine mainly for photography so sound is not vital . It would still be 'nice to have' though .

I'm not sure what causes my audio and mic sources to drop from my preferences list (thus no audio), but I have been able to get it going again.

I did three things:

1. shut down.
2. remove the battery for a minute.
3. start up and zap the PRAM (see previous instructions in this thread)
4. do it again if it didn't work.

Some combination of the above has gotten my audio working again. I've had to do this 3 different times this month.

I'm having the same problem on my 17 inch 1.5ghz. I've had my laptop for a couple of years and when I had a problem with the wiring on the built in speakers, I had it repaired. But the problem did not effect the headphone jacks (I could listen through the headphones). However, now, all audio is out (including the headphones), and I have not installed any new security updates for a while. This problem seemed to occur overnight while the laptop was left on. I'm currently running 10.4.10. I've zapped PRAM and I've even zapped the battery trick with Shift-pwr-ctrl-opt.

Just an update , someone mentioned above that they got sound when the plugged a USB headset .

To see if this might work for me , today I got the cheapest pair of USB loudspeakers I could find (£12.50 out of Maplins) and they work !

I had to go into sound preferences and select the USB speakers where they appeared in the output devices list . Internal audio still does not work .

I might still try replacing the audio board since , to my mind , the above proves that audio is working up to a certain point within the computer . Quite where the signal paths separate out between USB audio output and the internal amplifiers I don't know , but it may be worth trying the relatively inexpensive audio board first .

I'll post back if I get any further .

I was having the same trouble today after adding I life 08 last night.
The updates I added today did not help with my problem
I reset the PRAM and that worked. When I reset the PRAM, I waited until I heard the startup chime for the 5th time before I let up on the buttons because that was how an apple tech taught me to do it in the past.
If you did not try that yet you may want to see if it works.

Take Care,
