How to turn off Modem icon on MacBook Pro

After migrating an old Titanium PowerBook to a new MacBook Pro, a modem status icon is displayed in the menu bar of the new computer. The preference for displaying it must have been imported in the migration. However, as there is no modem in the MacBook Pro, there is no system preference panel for turning off the icon.

how can I remove the modem status icon from a modemless computer?

MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.5)
