Question about my G4 processor cache...

Okay so I bought a Dual G4 1.25GHz Power Mac G4 MDD. I use an identical computer at work but the L3 cache: is 2 MB per CPU and on the one I just purchased it is 1 MB per CPU. I know that the Power Mac that I use at work had a slower processor and was upgraded but per an online company, all Dual G4 1.25GHz MDD's are supposed to have 2 MB per CPU.

I honestly don't know how much of a difference this makes but it is something that I am curious about. When I bought the computer I considered getting the Dual 1.42 but ended up getting the one that I have because it was a little bit better of a deal.

P.S. Current specs ~ Dual G4 1.25Ghz, 80GB HD Operating Sys, 500GB SATA HD (2x250 GB HDD RAID 0) and ATI 9000 Pro.

That was one ugly MDD! What did you do to the back of it? Btw, for the record, my machine's copyright date is 2003. Which makes my machine the very last one to boot into OS 9.2.2 - Ready for some more weird stuff? The processor is a dual processor 1.25 of course with the 2MB L3 Cache. I thought the 2003 models were only single? Plus, I think the earlier MDD models had a different type of heatsink, similar to the quicksilver 2002. Look at the MDD 867 dual and you will see the heatsink that came with the first round of the dual 1.25 processor based MDDs.

in your G4 MDD FW800, What is that black tubing? did this come with the computer, or did you mod the machine so that it will cool better? Right now, with only 2 120MM fans and a PCI exhaust fan, my temperature of the CPU is about 88 degrees fahrenheit. I have a 120MM fan installed from the two-pin connector next to the airport(far right) and its on top of the roof of the optical drives.

2nd 120MM fan is underneath the front drive cage. And PCI fan is installed in the PCI slot, naturally.

I was wondering about the tubing, as I have a 1.42 copper heatsink on order for 40 dollars to replace the metal one I currently have on my dual 1.25. I was told by all channels that it will work.

I wouldn't give the FW800 logic board the time of day. Those machines with the FW800 are notorious for extreme heat. My machine it seems, has been spared the major problems of overheating like the FW800 are. Then again, my machine is not a FW800. The only other real benefits to the FW800 machines are built in bluetooth and airport extreme. Though, right now I running 802.11n USB with my G4 MDD. Also, my G4 MDD is the VERY last model to boot into OS 9.2.2 before the G5's. I am quite happy and content with my G4 MDD 2003 model, as it does everything I tell it to do, and probably better than those older G4's.

Advise him to stay with the FW400, otherwise suffer extreme heating issues.

Dude, I am just advising you to be careful and don't be surprised that the FW800 model overheats, especially if you have the ati radeon 9800 card. Personally, I am no gamer, nor do I use Apple's proprietary professional software. I am a government employee with the Dept of Health and Human Services - Baltimore region. I am not into pc photography, video streaming creation, rendering shadows and stuff, etc...

First off, do you use OS 9? If you DO use OS 9, then I can advise you not to go with the FW800. You will do better with a FW400 since they don't overheat as much. I am getting all this from some guy in Brazil who complained that when he had a 9800 pro video card, the overheating destroyed and melted down his video card! He complains that the temps in Brazil are over 100 degrees - he may be right, as I have no desire to ever go there myself.

Also, what are all those black tubes and where are they connected to? Did this come with the machine? I just ordered my copper heatsink for 50 bucks.

if you have the ATI 9000 PRO you don't have to worry since there is virtually nothing there to heavily tax the CPU. Maybe it was in the other person's FW800 - the other guy whom you spoke with. I just hope I don't have to hook up any sort of tubes from the case fan to to the copper heatsink, because someone on here told me that the copper heatsink works the same as it does for the 1.42 processor.

in other words, it will work with the dual 1.25.

hmm.. I said that your machine is capable of bluetooth and airport extreme wireless. If you see a small little module near the modem, then you got blue tooth, or just goto system profiler and check under bluetooth. As for airport extreme, you must have the airport extreme wireless card installed. If you are browsing the inet currently, then you have it installed.

I USE OS 9.2.2 for somethings, but not most. Just like the cool boot screen of OS 9 sometimes.
