Q: Power Mac G5 sleeps, then freezes and fans go overdrive.

I've browsed back a bit and noticed there are more than a few other people with this same issue.

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8. After upgrading to Leopard I noticed this happening more often, but ever now and then my Mac will go to sleep and freeze there. No keyboard action will wake it. Plus, while it is frozen asleep the fans to into overdrive. I have heard the fans kick up before while the machine is awake, but I have never heard anything like when this asleep/freeze happens. My wife likens it to a jet engine.

I recall this happening once through all iterations of Tiger. But with Leopard, it has now happened four times total.

I had done a clean install of Leopard, and I've only reinstalled a few other programs—iLife, iWork, Office 2004, CS 3, so no legacy from Tiger is hanging around in there.

Still, I have a habit of launching Activity Monitor when things behave strangely and I had noticed some strange things in Leopard that has me checking this out more often recently. I think I may have noticed some odd behavior by some programs that may be related to my Power Mac G5 intermittently freeze/revving unbelievably while asleep.

It seems that there is a greatest likelihood of the computer revving while asleep when the Real Memory allocated to the kernel_task process has climbed to roughly 300 MB. I thought it might also be a factor when other apps grabbed a massive chunk of Real Memory, so I've been alert for when Safari (for instance) climbs towards 300 MB of Real Memory as well. But no, the only one that seemed for certain to be related to this issue was kernel_task climbing to stratospheric Real Memory amounts.

Quiting apps helps get stupid programs like Safari to free up its Real Memory allocation, but I don't know of any way to get kernel_task to release its Real Memory allocation to proper levels besides restarting the entire computer.

Ever since I have noticed this apparent correlation between kernal_task and the freeze/sleep + fans issue, I restart or shutdown my Mac. And since I began shutting down my Mac when I see the Real Memory of kernel_task getting too high I have not had my Power Mac experience the freeze/sleep + fans.

I would be curious if anyone else who had noticed this freeze/sleep + fans issue has noticed if doing what I describe above helps them. I'm not sure why roughly 300MB of Real Memory seems to be a tipping point for me and I wonder if it might be a different amount for other people with Power Mac G5s and this issue. I wonder why kernel_task climbs to the heavens like a spreading wildfire grabbing more Real Memory and I wonder why Safari does it as well.

Me either (usb card) I did add ram recently and have since removed it and no difference. I tried removing all but one set and then switching one set at a time, no different. The problem is getting worse and worse and now I can not get it restarted at all. Don't know why the light is blinking 3 times (indicating incompatible ram installed) when it is the same ram that has been in it for 3 or four years.

I really need help. I'm looking into a power supply issue but trying to find out how to test it to see if that is it. Anyone know?

OK, apparently my computer is also having this issue (my co-worker would shut it off before I came in, didn't know).

    * So how many people who have tried altering the sleep method through the Terminal commands as listed above have not had a problem with it again?

    * How many people who DON'T let their computer go to sleep still have this problem (it appears possibly one poster above disabled sleep and still had the issue).

It appears that it has to do with sleep and the method/order of going to sleep. Just trying to see how many folks have actually tried the fixes offered.

The terminal command worked for me.
I let my computer sleep after a length of time, but I don't put it to sleep myself.

I prevented it from going into sleep mode and that solved that part of the problem but then it started freezing while using Safari and it would take a whole ordeal to get it running again. I removed and checked my power supply as per apples service manual and it is fine. I may have to replace my logic board to get it to run again. It is currently DOA. This is happening to way too many people for this to be just a hardware problem...

I had the problem prior to installing leopard. It continued after Leopard. Apple replaced the Logic Board. The problem has returned. This is about the 4th time this month. I have not added any usb card.

I will be calling applecare as the warranty runs out the end of this year.

I've had the exact same problem as described by many of you:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1563635&tstart=45

I put the computer to sleep and then about 30 seconds or so later the fans come on at high 'take off' speed. The only cure being to hold down the power button.

    I have tried...

    1. Onyx maintenance.
    2. Disc Utility (Verify & Repair Disc permissions).
    3. Erase and install of Leopard 10.5.3 and all apps from the ground up.
    4. Hard ware check with the original install disc - all fine.

The problem persists, BUT only when there is a load placed on the computer. If there are only one or two apps open its ok, but if I have some large Adobe PS files open with other apps it does not like it. I also noticed that in the Activity Monitor in Utilities something called kernel_task takes up a lot of Real Memory.

Has anyone come up with a definitive fix that works?

    YZ.

Hey same problem, I got a G5 Quad, and it goes to sleep some times, but others it just goes on "Jet Mode" other times. I talked to the tech guy on the phone. I explained the symptoms and everything to recreate it. He suggested that it could be due to my external hard drive. He advised me to take it off and see if it does it again.
Because my computer seems to do it randomly, I quickly developed the superstition that maybe it was my external hard drive. After discovering my computer getting ready for "take off" without the external hard drive in place, it was clear to me that the Apple tech had no clue as to what he was talking about. I will call them again some time later on today. Hopefully they can provide a little more help next time.
    I'll keep you guys posted.
I've been an Apple customer for some time now; knowing how apple works, the end to this issue is just an update away. Keep an eye out guys.

    PowerPhill,

I agree Apple has no clue as to what is causing this. I sure wish they would figure it out as my applecare runs out this year. I will be calling apple about this. Don't want my G5 dying on me after my applecare runs out. That would really make me mad!

It always seems to happen after using the screensaver. Yesterday i thought i had put it to sleep, but upon returning home, i found the fan's roaring like a jet engine. GRRRRRRR

I have observed that when my computer goes to sleep (automatically/scheduled) while at the login screen (even if users are logged in or not), the computer will do the "jet launch freeze-out" and I have had no recourse but to hard-shutdown the machine. Since setting sleep to Never for both computer and display, I haven't had the problem. My screensaver works fine and the computer wakes up from that as usual. My display is set to put itself to sleep after an extended period and computer is schedule to shut down every night at the same time. Again, no problems. Obviously it is the "sleep" function that is the problem. And as the "sleep" function was designed to prevent battery drain on laptops, do desktops really need to go to sleep? How much energy are you really saving by using this function. I feel that if I am done using the machine, it is better shut down, than left on in some somnambulistic twilight zone. Just give your computer a rest and you'll sleep a lot better, too, I'm sure.

Same problem here. Since I updated to 10.5.3 I've experienced several freezes and fans going crazy a day.

I had tried disk repair, permission repair, cleaning font caches, hardware check using TechTool Pro etc. with no result and finally Archive and Install of the OS.

I then called Apple support and was told that this must be a problem with the OS and that I should do a clean install of Leopard.

I did so! And all the updates and programs like Adobe, Macromedia etc. (took me a whole day)

Today the same problem appeared again. When I came back from a brake, the fans went full blast and the system was frozen.

I will call Apple again tomorrow and will post here the reply.

Meanwhile I hope that Apple will find a solution for this problem. I strongly believe that it has to do with the 10.5.3 update since prior to that, I hardly had any crashes.

As my applecare will be running out soon, i took my desktop to the apple store yesterday. we will see if they can find a problem or not. Since it happens randomly, i dont know if they will be able to replicate it. i will sure be mad it the computer dies on me after my applecare expires.

A similar problem I am having. Nearly 3 weeks ago I found that my machine was locking up (got the little beach ball) no response from the keyboard , the fans started and the g5 was ready for take-off. I had to force the power off on the front of the machine. It happened a few times. It has been in for warranty repair twice since then(first time replacing the processor , second time I got a new logic board). I just got it back on friday and its still having the same problems. (Though the beach ball no longer appears) Screen locking up, and fans kick in after a few minutes. I have to force the machine off manually but at least it is powering back up again, but its a pain i.t.a. as its so unpredictable at locking up. My machine is 3 years old and the extended warranty runs out this week.

My G5 is currently at Apple for the same thing. It started not long after I purchased it. I have been given the run around by Apple care and store tech's for the longest time. I was at my wits end. It got worse after I installed Leopard. I finally decieded that it was time since I have less than 6 months left on Applecare for this machine. So far it has been in the shop for almost a week. They are testing the RAM, the current theory is that I have bad RAM, I don't believe that is the case though. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next.
