Which mini-DV FireWire Camcorder?

Any recommendations for a good mini-DV FireWire camcorder based on the following set of objectives?

(1) I have used a Sony DCR-PC101 mini-DV for the past 5 years and so compatibility with these recorded tapes is important.

(2) I ONLY do family/occassions/travel kind of video. Nothing professional. So, plug-nplay is important to me. The ability to do it in a time-efficient manner is very very important to us.

(3) At some point I will upgrade to Leopard but NOT NOW. Also, I intend to keep using iMovie HD 6.0 as i like its feature set more than iMovie 8.0. Also, at some point in the near future I see myself upgrading to Final Cut Express from iMovie.

(4) The old Sony DCR-PC101 camcorder is on the brink and i need to buy a new one. *MONEY IS NOT THE LIMIT*. I am willing to spend what it takes to get a good camcorder that can capture good video that is easy to edit.

(5) I use external Firewire hard drives also (for storage etc). Ideally, if possible, i would like to buy a camcorder that offers FW800!

(6) I also need the camcorder to have an ANALOG-IN to have the ability to convert old VHS tapes into Digital (Is there a better solution?).

(7) Capability to attach an external mic is desirable (though not a must if the quality of the built-in is good).

(8) The new camcorder SHOULD be able to read the old mini-DVs i recorded with the Sony DCR-PC101.

(9) Any accessories (lenses, flash light, etc) that you would recommend as well

Thanks

Intel iMac 20", PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

.. as I answered you in your PM to me, now for the rest of the world:

I guess, the *Canon HV20* is the only device, which fullfills all your criteria, esp. 6,7,8...

plus, it is an excellent Hidef recording device and it is 100% compatible to your Macs and iM5,6,8.. you probably have to purchase as an extra a 4/6pin fw-cable..

ad 9) .. don't forget a tripod on your shopping list .. 😉

I just bought a Canon HV20 and I am very disappointed that, so far, I cannot manage to capture the video in my intel mac mini. It seems that this should work so it might be either the firewire cable that I just bought in the apple store is not working or the camera firewire port is damage. The system log of the apple does not report anything wrong, it just look that nothing is connected. I have done everything what appears in the documentation but without success. Maybe you can recommend something else to solve this problem?.

connect camera to powerline (not just running by battery) connect via firewire, set camera to PLAY..

now, launch the System Profiler (Blue Apple, upper left, 'About../more') .. select 'firewire' and have a look wether your device is shown in list.

if not.. :
cable broken
fw-port at Mac 'fried'
fw-port at Camera 'fried'

I have canon HV20 and very happy with it, awesome picture quality and it is 100% compatible with imovie 6 HD and imovie 08, no firewire issues and it reads my old dv tapes which were made with sony DCR-HC40 minidv camera without problem. The only anecdotal negative i read on these forum is canon dont like another firewire device attached when you have camera attached.

Thanks for your response.

Have you tried attaching a FireWire device at the same time that your Canon HV20 was plugged? Did you encounter any FireWire issues resulting from this?

also, the other negative I heard here is the sound quality of the canon HV20 - that it tapes the sound of its own machine! Did you encounter that?

Good to know that its natively compatible with iMovie HD and iMovie 08; and also that it plays the old Sony tapes.
