LaCie d2 quadra won't power up with auto mode????

Power switch in auto position. I always have to use the power brick to power it up... Tried the USB and Firewire cable to no avail. Otherwise works fine with TM when on the power brick.
Anyone else seen this and have advice? Thank you in advance.

iMac 20' CoreDuo, Mac OS X (10.4.4), iMac 17' G4, PB G4 15, Cube, Mac Plus

I have not noticed this - I turn off the power to everything when I shutdown the computer.
However, while the blue light stays on before I turn off the power, the drive itself is not running.
The LaCie does sleep between TM backups, so it may be that the blue light simply indicates it is available.
If I eject the drive the blue light stays on until I unplug the cable, so the automatic mode may keep the drive in some quasi-sleep state between uses.

When I do power up the system in the morning, the LaCie does turn on along with everything else.
