iPod Nano isn't recognized by iTunes/computer

I've had my iPod Nano for almost six months now, and up until now I haven't had any problems with it. When I connect it to the computer, it charges but it doesn't say "Do not disconnect", it doesn't sync any new songs and on iTunes, there is no "device" section and the computer doesn't recognize the iPod.
I've downloaded the latest iTunes software, and I use a Windows XP OS, it's a Dell PC.

Please help! I've looked at many of the support topics, but none of them seem to fit my situation. Thanks.

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:
iPod missing in My Computer and in iTunes
iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date

If you are using a laptop, this page might help: iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB

I'm in this boat also. It would be nice to be able to reset the ipod, but that requires that you see it as a source devide in itunes....which is the problem in the first place! I did all of the things and it still won't work. I'm sure all of our computers, USB ports & ipod cables didn't just magically stop working right after we downloaded the latest itunes - that's just too big of a coincidence!

I just bought a 2nd generation and am having the same problem; neither the pc nor itunes sees it. My old shuffle pops up everytime. I've gone thru all the reinstall, regedit and all the other suggestions in support to no avail.

I've scanned this message board and there must be 100 messages with the same issue - not one of them has received any valuable information.

I think we've all been skunked with a bad product.

I've had the same problem with my Nano. It just stopped being recognized by iTUnes, but Windows Vista still acknowledged it. I've tried every troubleshooting item multiple times and no one at iTunes or iPod can give me the answers. THANK YOU to the person who suggested UPDATING USB DRIVERS. I hadn't tried that specifically and it worked!!!! I've tried updating iPod Drivers before and kept getting told that nothing existed. But updating USB drivers did the trick. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
