Leopard Compatibility - Canoscan 5000F

Is the Canoscan 5000F scanner compatible with Leopard?

Thanks

I may be wrong and I am sure that some one will correct me if I am. I think the issue of drivers between Tiger and Leopard may be a mute point because some of the printer companies may not have updated their drivers for Leopard. I don't believe you can load Tiger drivers into Leopard but if you could they would only function if they were compatible to Tiger and Leopard. I also believe the drivers that are available via Leopard are the printer companies drivers. Apple just makes it easier by providing them with their OS.

I know that Canon is working on a new MP Navigator because the old one is not compatible with Leopard. You can use individual drivers to print, scan and fax but not the Navigator.

I finally updated to Leopard a few days ago. I had the updater keep user accounts and save the old system files in an archive folder. I was pleased to see that all of my programs (so far) work - especially the ones that require registration.

The only drawback is that I lost my printer drivers and the CanoScan 5000F driver. The printers came back without much trouble, but the CanoScan was a little more difficult.

I went to Canon's website to download the most recent versions (which are from 2002 - the same as what I've been using). The 5000F8020MXEN.dmg file comes with an installer which complained about "Cannot access (filename)" error -5000".

I found that even though the installer claimed that the installation was successful, it failed to copy most of the files to their proper destinations. The .dmg file had 6 folders whose contents I had to manually put into their proper destinations.

Into CFMSupport_Login (I didn't do anything with this)

Into CMPrefs ===> Mac HD:Library:ColorSync:Profiles:

Into Lib_CFMSupport ===> Mac HD:Library:CFMSupport:

Into Plug-in ===> Mac HD:Applications:Canoscan 4.1:Plug-Ins:
I also put an extra copy into Mac HD:Library:PlugIns

Into Pref_5000 ===> Mac HD:Library:Preferences:CanoScan 5000/5000F:

Into User_Shared ===> Mac HD:Users:Shared:CanoScan5000/5000F (The installer took care of this one)

Some of the folders already existed by the time I did this. I suspect that the installer created them. I cannot guarantee that everything is correct, but at least I have a functioning scanner under Leopard.

I am glad that I don't have to now start looking for another scanner when the one that I have works perfectly well for what I do.

There is a solution! I thought I would have to trash my LiDE 500f scanner, but I followed the instructions at Canon to a "T" and it worked out. If you already have the latest CanoScan software and drivers, then simply search for the old ScanGear folder and trash it-- this may solve your problem. If not, go to Canon USA's website identify your scanner, click on the Download & Drivers tab, select your OS, then download both the latest drivers and the latest CanoScan software (possibly 4.9.3). Download both and install. BE SURE TO TRASH YOUR OLD SCANGEAR FOLDER before you install them. This worked for me without any hitches.

Thank you for your info Lawrence.

I followed all the steps in your 1/12/08 post but am still having trouble getting my CanoScan 5000F to work with Leopard.

I have installed the latest CanoScan Toolbox 5.0.1.2 and the latest driver from the Canon website (5000F8020MXEN.dmg)

When i try to scan using Canoscan Toolbox, i get a window saying "Failed to open a driver"

You wrote:

But, I do not have a "Canoscan X:Plug-Ins" Folder....? Nor do I have a plug-ins folder in HD/Library.
So, I placed it in: HD/Applications/Canon Utilities/CanoScan Toolbox 5.0
I'm assuming this is wrong.

Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you
