Error 2096 - QuickTime Failed to Initialize

I just recently bought a new iPod and had to update to iTunes 7.4 or better. I've made sure that I have SP2 and have all the latest updates. But no matter how many times I uninstall Quicktime and iTunes I still get this:
Quicktime failed to initialize (Error 2096). Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
The last thing I did was to remove any programs (Quicktime, iPod update and iTunes)and folders from my C drive and from the recycle bin before restarting and reinstalling. Still I get this message. HELP!

PC: Toshiba Satellite 1405-S151, Windows XP, 1.20GHz Intel Celeron; 30G

Thanks for the article. I just changed the setting and restarted my computer. Nothing. I still get this message:
Quicktime failed to initialize (Error 2096). Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.

Hi Burningm,
Sorry that didn't solve it. I know you have already reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime, but do you want to have a look at this article on "General Installation Troubleshooting", there may be something you have missed when uninstalling. Try installing the standalone version of Quicktime before iTunes.

Again, thanks for the input, but that was the last article I read before I came to the discussion boards. I called in the Geek Squad and they tried. Machine needs serious diagnostics since I've done virtually nothing until last night to keep up with the mountain of patches required by windows; next computer is a MAC. I just wanna push a button and get my music email and whatever else.

I've been followng this problem on numerous threads and evetything that has been suggested hasn't worked. SOme people seem to have solved i on thier computer but what they posted that worked form them hasn't worked yet for me. I'm still tryin....

I too have wasted many hours following the suggested instructions, without any success, and I am reasonably computer literate! Instead, I chose to download the previous version (7.4.3) and install it after removing 7.5 completely. That worked fine and I even had my previous library intact. I also disabled automatic update checks!

I installed the 7.4.3 and than I changed the compatibilty setting in the C drive and it works now. I saw it on another thread. Works fine but I lost my music. Had to drag my music from my music folder to iTunes and it works fine.

Good news! My iPod is functioning. I too had to go back to 7.4.3. in order for it work. I then had to de-select all the compatibility settings (that was a wizard of the manufacturers on my stupid PC cause it wasn't obvious). Thats what finally worked. Unfortunately, I caved and called the Geek Squad; they couldn't resolve it but at least my machine runs better.

I got it working by turning off compatibility mode on the iTunes app:

My quicktime was actually fine, the error was a little misleading.
