iPhone Apple Store Sales Pitch

I was so disappointed yesterday to hear an Apple Store employee tell me that the iPhone is sold exclusively by ATT because only ATT has the network capable of supporting advanced features like visual voicemail. He then told me the reason Apple did not provide features like Copy/Paste is because they are trying to protect the security of the device. I asked him why I am not allowed to make my own ringtones from my own music, and he said it is simply because Apple does not want to be sued by musicians and labels, and because of (here it comes again) Security.

I have been buying Apple products steadily since the late 1970's, and I must admit that the company has become less honest just as steadily. I am so sorry to see it go, but Steve Jobs leadership has finally become so obsessed with locking in customers to half baked technology, the sales force has taken to making up excuses for the easy to code features left out of the product.

As a GSM phone, the choices in the US are T-Mobile and ATT. ATT has better coverage throughout the country and it was the company that signed a deal with Apple for 5 years.

Copy/paste will probably appear in an update somewhere along the way. I've never used copy & paste on any cell phone so it's not a deal breaker for me.

As far as ringtones, you can create your own with the latest version of iTunes and iPhone update so the clerk in the store was incorrect on this one.

The other thing to remember is this is *VERSION 1* of the iPhone. If you think back to version 1 releases of other products, they were all lacking features that came later on.

The iPod comes to mind. Version 1 was either 5 or 10 gb and could only play audio and cost $400 - $500. The iPod Classic has either an 80 gb or 160 gb drive and can play audio, video, etc plus it costs a lot less than the first version. Does this make the first version deficient or a groundbreaking device that paved the way for more features in a more compact device?
