No Sound Through Output Jack

My Macbook will not output any sound when I plug headphones in. The internal speakers work fine and it recognizes the headphones when I plug them in in the Sound preferences output tab. The headphones work just fine on my iPod. There are no little boops when I have the headphones in and try to adjust the volume. I've only ever plugged headphones into the output port, no speakers. Thanks for the help.
