Uninstall Apple Mobile Device

I have purchased a new Ipod touch and am experiencing problems in connecting it to Itunes. When I connect I get the message that I need to update to the latest version of Apple Device Manager. I have tried removing and reinstalling the latest version of Itunes to no avail.
I have then attempted to completely remove Itunes, quicktime and Apple Mobile Device through add remove programs, however each time I attempt to remove Mobile Device I get the message that there has been a 'fatal error' and the program is not removed.
Does anyone have any ideas as this is driving me crazy ?
Thanks.

download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any *Apple Mobile Device Support* entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those Apple Mobile Device Support entries, and click “remove”.

Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
