Quicktime Virus

Has anyone heard anything about this?

Apparently apple released a version of quicktime with a virus in it, and it will crash your system. My moms friend updated and his computer crashed, and they are also blocking quicktime at her workplace.

Does anyone know about this?

You need to do some more homework.
Apple didn't release software that contained any "virus".
But the current release does require a security fix because there is a method of "exploiting" the software to do bad things and I'm certain Apple is working on a fix.
Any application has security related issues if they can be used to connect to the Internet or other networks. You are a thousand times more likely to have security holes in your current email software than by using QuickTime yet you probably will not stop using it, right?
The current QuickTime exploit involves specially crafted QuickTime Media Link files (.qtl files that download to your computer) and use RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) inside them.
You can avoid any possible threat by using common sense. Don't open email attachments from unknown senders. Don't click on links from Sites you do not trust.
If you do download any .qtl file you can preview the source found in it by opening the file in any text editor (right click and open with). If the text contains a link to rtsp:// just toss it in the trash until a patch is offered to close this security hole.

One of my QuickTime Media Link files. You'll get a very tiny file download to your computer that you can open in a text editor and "preview" the source URL.
My file (obviously) does not contain any trojan, virus or malware and is safe to view.
