UMAX C500 603e All App Launches Freeze

How to obtain system software for UMAX C500 w/603e?

I have an old UMAX C500 with 96M RAM, CD ROM, Apple Personal Laser Printer, ATI 3D card, CH Products F-16 Fighter Stick, Thrust, Pro Pedals, Game Pad, and about 100 games. I can't find any original OS CD's that work with the system and I can't find anywhere online to order an Operating System that will work with this computer. I'd really like to be able to get this system running so my kids can play the games or at least I can donate it to some place that can put it to use. I'd hate to throw the system into the recycle bin.

Apple no longer supports clones. Suggest that you do a web search for message boards and mail lists for the specific brand of clone that you have. Use Sherlock, Google and/or MacGoogle to research. The links listed below are a good place to start.

I haven't seen anything on any of those sites that tell me how I can get a copy of even Apple OS 8.6. I know 8.6 works on the machine because that's the OS it has had on it for years. However, I can't find any place to purchase or download OS 8.6. I know if I can get a copy of the Mac OS 8.6 I can get the computer working again. So, where can I get Mac OS 8.6?

Hi, Kirk -

OS 8.6 is not downloadable; there is an OS 8.6 updater that is downloadable, but it requires OS 8.5 or OS 8.5.1 to be already installed. The last full-install OS that Apple has available for downloading is OS 7.5.3.

Hi. I don't know if you've seen the site below. Also, I believe you can run pretty well any of the Mac OS up to the early days of OS X (with a little help from some 3rd party installer software). . My sister has been running 9.2.2 very successfully (can use MSN, etc) on her c600e - but she has I think, 196 mb of Ram, but still the 2GB hard drive. Of course, you need the "Retail" installers mentionned earlier (but a retail installer of any of the OSssss could be used - like if you have one for another Mac you own - even 7.6 has good merits). You could look on eBay to see if you can purchase the original installation disks (parts of which I think are needed for the cdrom, if they aren't downloadable from the site below - some weird firmware glitche there)..
