Error type 11 during installation - PowerBook 667

Hello everyone,

Please, take some time to read this.
I recently purchased a PowerBook 667 DVI which came with OS 10.1 but no system disks.

I wiped the drive clean using a custom made bootable OSX disk and attempted to start from scratch using an OS9 retail CD (9.2.1). This is not a hardware specific disk.

The machine gives me a "Type 11 error" message each time I try and boot to the CD.

Firmware is up to date, OS9 drivers are installed. Resetting the PRAM, booting with extensions off even resetting the PMU did not help.

The funny thing is that on this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25114, this machine is listed as compatible with OS 9.2.1 which apparently is not the case! I do not have OS X and I am not really interested in it.

I presume that finding the original CDs that shipped with this computer is very difficult.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated. Many thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Hi John. Welcome to the Forum.

I dont know the 667 and I do think it will happily run 9.2.1.

Type 11 is an unspecified hardware error - if you have anything at all connected to the Powerbook, please try again without it…

Otherwise why was it wiped with anything other than your OS9 retail CD (9.2.1)? Was that just to install 9 drivers, please?

Exactly how does your "custom made bootable OSX disk" differ from a standard Apple one - or is it a straight copy?

The original CDs that shipped with that computer should be only a phone call away - and some cash - to some combination of AppleCare/AppleStore depending on your location…

Error Type 11

Probable Causes: A miscellaneous hardware exception error indicates a hardware conflict has occurred, though this error may also be caused by an extension conflict or corrupt software. Hardware-related causes can be related to cache cards and SCSI devices.

Possible Solutions: When a system error occurs in only one application, try running the application with extensions disabled. If the error does not recur, begin troubleshooting for extension conflicts.

If this error occurs only in one application and while extensions are disabled, try trashing the application's preferences so the application creates a new one. If the error does not recur, a damaged preferences file was the cause.

If you're using is a cache card or accelerator card, remove it and try to re-create the problem.

Note: Do this only if you are familiar with installing and uninstalling Macintosh hardware. If you are not, and you believe the problem is hardware related, consider taking your Macintosh to a qualified service provider for help.

Another possible cause is one or more SCSI devices. Try troubleshooting the SCSI chain to determine if this is the case.

If, after performing these solutions, the error recurs, your hard disk may have problems such as bad sectors or a corrupted directory tree. Use a Macintosh disk utility to check for -- and possibly repair -- problems.

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

Hello, everyone !

Thank you for your replies.

The custom OS X cd was created with BootCD (a freeware). There are not external devices connected to the computer during installation attempts.

I totally agree with ‘Don Archibald’. I also believe that on the compatibility chart there is a typo. According to this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517 , this computer came indeed with OS 9.2.2 and subsequently can not be compatible with 9.2.1, not to mention 9.1. Apparently, the system cds that came with this computer is what is needed.

I gave it a try with a local Apple reseller but with not luck. Actually, it would be surprising if they still had any copies around.

Any ideas are more than welcome. Thank you for your time.
