Ok guys, I have got it, I know where I went wrong. ',' had to be ';'

=DATEDIF(D3 ;NOW();"Y") & " years, " & DATEDIF(D3;NOW();"YM") & " months, and " & DATEDIF(D3;NOW();"MD") & " days"

it works fine now.

thanks again

Use the DATEDIF function

The Help in Numbers explains the syntax very well but do put in the quote marks when entering the method for the function.

For the "end date" part you could have a cell with the NOW() function in so it will update the result each time the sheet is opened. Use the Inspector to format the cells and turn off the Time element of NOW().

Thx Chris,

I have tried to enter the syntax according to the help:

DATEDIF(D3,NOW(),"Y") & " years, " & DATEDIF(D3,NOW(),"YM") & " months, and " & DATEDIF(D3,NOW(),"MD") & " days"

I'm not an expert in Numbers but I have entered a birthdate in D3 and I have entered the NOW() in E3. I have entered the syntaxt above in F3 but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello

Next time, it would be useful to describe your config.

When Numbers is used in English in a standard config, the decimal separator is period and the argument separator in formulas is comma.

You are using a "non-standard" config, which you may perfectly do, but nobody may guess that you are using Numbers in English on a system using the decimal comma (the reason why you must use the semi-colon).

May I add that to make the use of this config more confortable, you may download for FREE a script available on my iDisk:
