Read .iso image on OS 9.2?

I've been able to launch Classic on my Tiger powerbook and use DiskCopy to mount an .iso image made in Tiger.

Now, when I move this .iso to a machine running 9.2 (not Classic on OS X; just pure OS 9.2) and run DC to do the same thing, it reports an error and fails to mount the image. Anyone?

The versions of DiskCopy on both machines are identical, i.e. 6.3.3 (Driver 1.4 PPC).

Thanks, people.

Hi, Alex -

Besides, even if his OS 9 could mount the .iso image, what was he going to do with it afterward? He could run the installer from his system HD, could he?

No.

The OSX installer will run only in OSX, so the machine would need to be booted to OSX of sufficient version (in this case, that probably means Tiger) in order to run the installer. Hence the need to boot the machine to an optical disk.

And, you can't boot a Mac to an OS on a disk image on the hard drive, since the image can't be mounted until the machine has booted. Catch 22.

The Tiger Install DVD can be exchanged for a set of CDs. To do that, use the link for that offer in the upper middle of this Apple webpage -

Hi, Alex -

The reason I suggested DiskCopy 6.4 is that it can mount many .dmg disk image files from OSX, unlike earlier versions of DiskCopy. I thought it might also be able to handle the .iso image type.

Good detective work on your part. OSX doesn't use File Type and Creator codes, which is probably why they are missing.

I don't know what the codes should be for an .iso image in OS 9. Perhaps someone else can post in with them.

Hi, Alex. You might be more successful using Disk Copy 6.5b11, but I don't know.

EDIT: If not, it may be because there are no Type and Creator codes defined for .iso disk images in OS 9, and that in turn may be because the structure of .iso images is such that they can't be used in OS 9. I haven't been able to find any information online that suggests it is possible to do so.

What is your objective in wanting to open an .iso image in OS 9? If you are trying to move information between a computer running Tiger and one running OS 9.2.2, there are much easier ways.

Sorry, eww, neglected to answer the latter part of your post.
I have a friend who is a graphics designer working on a Dual G4 desktop on OS 9 and I am trying to persuade him to switch to OS X. He has most of the applications he uses for OS X anyway, so it's just a psychological hurdle more than anything else. He is a little concerned about running OS X on his 'old' machine.
So I gave him my Tiger DVD to try, only his is only a CD drive, so he can't read it. That's why I made an .iso image (using ISOlator) of my install DVD, so he could use that to install and try Tiger on his G4. I knew that .dmg files don't mean zip on OS9, that's why I went for an .iso image.
Seems that he's out of luck so far.

Besides, come to think about it now, even if his OS 9 could mount the .iso image, what was he going to do with it afterward? He couldn't run the installer from his system HD, could he?

Alex: If your buddy is concerned about running OS X on his "old" dual-processor G4, he might take a hint from Tiger's performance on your single-processor Powerbook. If that doesn't convince him it would be OK, point out to him that since his PowerMac is dual-bootable, there's no reason he'd have to "switch" to OS X at all: he could have both OSes installed, and boot into whichever one he likes at any time. That's exactly how I overcame my strong aversion to OS X over a period of six or eight months, finally becoming a Panther convert.

In reading over your Tiger license agreement, you may have missed the fact that a single-user license (assuming that's what you have) doesn't permit you to give away copies of the software, even for "trial" purposes.

Apple has a $9.95 Media Exchange Program for Tiger buyers who need the software on CDs instead of DVDs. Go to the Apple Store page, scroll down and click on "Mac OS X Tiger" in the left sidebar, and on the resulting page, scroll down below "Hardware Requirements" to "Tiger order information" at the bottom of the right sidebar. That opens a Tiger FAQ page, and at the top of the right column on it is info about the media exchange program. So when your friend orders his/her own copy of Tiger (not necessarily from the Apple Store, BTW), s/he'll be able to swap the DVD installer set for a CD set. If s/he is in no hurry to install Tiger anyway, the short extra delay in obtaining usable media shouldn't be much of an annoyance.

EDIT: Don beat me to the punch -- as usual!

OK, no need to panic about rights; it was really going to be an honest trial, I don't think Apple would suffer financially.

In any case, it looks like the guy is going to go for it, in which case I guess he'll get the CD version straight away (I am assuming that he can get these as opposed to getting the DVD and then having to fork out another $9.95 for the exchange, right?).

Thanks for all the info guys.

Alex Zachopoulos...

If you are looking for compatable replacement optical drives look over XLR8's website. (link below) They have a database of what brands and models to look for.

I can say it was a lifesaver last week when my CDRW died in my eMac. I found an off the shelf model of a Sony Combo that happened to be listed there.
