Problems setting up mail server

I have been trying to set up Mail Server, I have the internal mail working fine... but can't get the external relay working.

This is the error message that comes up 'Name service error for name=smtp1.tnz.mail.vip.aue.yahoo.com type=MX: Malformed or unexpected name server reply'

Can anyone point me in the right direction at least!

G5, Mac OS X (10.5)

With this amount of information it is impossible to help you.

Start by by opening terminal and posting the unmodified output of:
postconf -n

relayhost = send.xtra.co.nz

Are you authorised to have your mail server send through "send.xtra.co.nz"? With or without authentication?

myhostname = macserver.private

Your host name should be a fully qualified name.

The log entry you show in your first post is not necessarily relevant. Do you see similar log entries no matter who you send to?

Yes I do have authorisation to send to xtra, with authentication on.

What would be a fully qualified name?

I haven't had any external mail work yet, only internal. I'm still quite new to the server side of things.

Your domain name is Feast.co.nz so your host name should probably be somehost.feast.co.nz or simply feast.co.nz as well. Make sure it has DNS reverse resolution in place.

Coming back to your issue, try and send a couple of mails and post the relevant log entries.

Single log lines are useless. This could just as well be an entry while you were restarting mail services.
Always make sure log entries are in a context.
If the mail server wasn't running at all, you wouldn't even be able to send internal mail.

No. But it certainly is better to run a mail server of a static IP.

I would assume your ISP is handling your DNS, so ask them to do it.
