Internet Explorer 5.1.7

Hi,

I've got bit of a problem with my Internet explorer.
It won't load some of the menu buttons/bars properly and also when I click on some buttons it won't take take me to the links.
This is really frustrating. Is there maybe a plug-in or something that will fix this problem? And can someone also tell me how I can get hold of the text/plain plug-in.

Hope everything makes sence...

MSIE 5.1.7 is getting a bit old and cranky on the internet. It tends to be slow, hangs up on javascript, leaks memory until it freezes. However, have you tried a new download and a reinstall to be sure there isn't any underlying corruption causing the problem.

As to the menu bars displaying, have you checked on the preferences windows to be sure everything is properly selected that you want in the first place.

I don't have the "text/plain plugin" you mention. Whose is it? If you go to the Apple menu//about Explorer/ and click on support button, it will give you a listing of what is installed which might be useful for you.

Hi, tPod -

If you are using OS 9.1 or later make sure the extension named HTMLRenderingLib is active in Extensions Manager. If you are using an earlier version of OS 9, make sure that extension is not active.

Be sure that the extension named Text Encoding Converter is active in Extensions Manager, and that the Text Encodings folder (in System Folder) contains exactly 15 files. For OS 9.1 and later, all of those files as well as the extension Text Encoding Converter should be version 1.6.

If one of the buttons in the Toolbar that does not work is the one for Sherlock, replace the alias for Sherlock in the Apple menu with the Sherlock program itself.

There are some known problem causers in 9.2.x; if you have any of these, try disabling or removing them - IdleTime (extension); N2MP3 (extension); and True Finder Integration (control panel).

Good luck -

Hi Don,

I'm using OS 9.2.2. My HTMLRenderingLib is active.
I do not have and extension named Text Encoding Converter. Could that be the problem? If so, where can i get that extension? How do I install it?
In my System folder the Text Encodings folder contains exactly 15 files.

The buttons I'm talking about are ones on a website.
Like when I've filled out an application form for example, the button I need to click on to process the application won't work.

Hi, tPod -

About the extension Text Encoding Converter, I heep forgetting that it is one of the few that does not show up in Extensions Manager - you will have to look in the Extensions folder itself to make sure it is there. It probably is.

About the buttons on a webpage not working correctly, that may be a Java issue. Make sure that Java (Apple MRJ) is enabled in IE's Preferences - Preferences > Web Browser > Java, at the top of that page.

The latest version for MRJ on OS 9 is v. 2.2.5. To check for that, do a search for the item Apple Applet Runner and do a Get Info on it - it should be version 2.2.5.

Sorry to come in on the middle of this, but I have a similar issue which has recently surfaced.

I use IE 5.1.6 - should I switch to 5.1.7.

All the extension settings you mention are ok for me BUT "MRJ on OS 9 is v. 2.2.5." Mine is 2.2.2.
Could that be an issue? How do I solve it?

MY symptoms occur in title bars on sites and menu buttons. For ex., the words "Apple Discussions" [found above to the left of "Search : In this topic...]" show only as half words - cut in half - I only see the top half of the words.

On another site [indiamike.com] the home page button on the menu bar doesn't work - I get the message that the server does not respond but if I click the title above the menu bar it takes me home. Both of these problems do not occur with Netscape 7 - but I hate Netscape - it's slow and I have yet [after 3 years!] to figure out how to do a search that doesn't involve at least 3 steps - I made my home page be a blank page - a search takes me to google or netscape search and doesn't do the quick searches that IE does with just putting in the word.

Do you have any suggestions on this problem - before I try the solutions mentioned above, I wonder if it's the same problem.

Hi, Mrs H -

You can update your MRJ with this download - Article #75097 - MRJ 2.2.5

I would suggest updating to IE 5.1.7. It's easy to get to - just click the "e" logo in the upper right of any IE browser window, and you'll be taken to Mactopia, MS's download site for Mac software.

...the words "Apple Discussions" [found above to the left of "Search : In this topic...]" show only as half words - cut in half - I only see the top half of the words.

Not everything is as it seems on a webpage. In this instance, the "Apple Discussions" part of the page is actually a graphic, not text.

FWIW, it is also a button - if you click it, you'll be taken to the Discussions homepage.

Usually when a graphic does not fully load it can be forced to do so by clicking and holding on it, then selecting "reload image" from the contextual menu that appears. The usualy cause for the incomplete loading is a full cache. Emptying the cache on a regular basis can help prevent that from happening. To do that, open IE's Preferences and go here - Preferencers > Web Browser > Advanced. In the middle of that page is a button labeled "empty now" - click it.

On another site [indiamike.com] the home page button on the menu bar doesn't work - I get the message that the server does not respond but if I click the title above the menu bar it takes me home.

Webpages are written to be compatible with certain browsers - well-written ones are compatible with more browsers and browser versions, but take more time to build. What you describe could be an issue with the webpage not displaying quite right in the version of IE you're using - the area of the webpage that responds to a click may be offset from the visual display of the link. Though not common, that effect is not unusual.

Ten hours later, no reply yet....

Like many folk, especially those who are semi-retired, I keep odd hours. If you check my history of posting times, you'll find I'm liable to post any time of the day or night. Sometimes my other activities keep me away from Discussions for a while.

Okay, I don't think all the problems will be solved with upgrading. I did that, and still have the same problems.

"Webpages are written to be compatible with certain browsers - well-written ones are compatible with more browsers and browser versions"
The button problems, only occur on the ONE Mac here at work. The other one works perfectly fine. The thing is, I don't want to keep on jumping to the other Mac and kick the person working on it of to go onto the net. I've checked that all the settings are the same and everyting, still not working...

Please, you seem like a real problem solver. I'm sure you can solve this one...

Dear Don,

I didn't mean to imply that you were not getting back fast enough, merely that things had changed since I initially wrote the question.

I haven't had a chance to do any of your suggestions, but I wanted to get back to let you know that you misunderstood my comment "Ten hours later, no reply yet..." which was just meant to give a time frame.

I REALLY appreciate your help and time and will get back to you when I try the updates.

"FWIW" means what?

Thank you 🙂 ,
Mrs H
