faster encoding or transfer of movie to Apple TV

I recently purchased a new IMac and a new video encoder. I have begun to download all my 8mm home movies (each movie is 1-2 hours)into IMovie and eventually into Itunes to view on my television through Apple TV. (This is a great solution and it really works).I realize that the encoding is going to be minute to minute when downloading but the generation of thumbnails into event planner takes an additional 20 minutes. Furthermore, once I share the file to Itunes (so I can view on Apple TV) it takes an additional 2-3 hours. With a library of a couple hundred tapes, this will take forever. Is there a faster way to do this?

There is a product, "Elgato Turbo H.264", which will allow you to transfer video from your computer into AppleTV at faster speeds. The video of course has to be in a format recognizable by quicktime. The turbo is a little stick-like device that you place on your USB port.

Check it out and the specs on:

elgato.com or

Be careful, be sure you check in he specs the kind of input video formats you can put in. Check how may steps you would need to get the clip into appleTV, but I think that you will be shortening the time it takes you in any case.

It is not cheap, but "no pain no gain"

Also, there is a trick to getting a large number of video files quickly to the Apple TV.

Once you have everything on the Apple TV, new videos can be synced to the ATV wirelessly.
However, for the first time, this could take forever. This is partly because the ATV does not hog all your wireless bandwidth. It leaves some for other uses like browsing and email.

So, the first time through, you can sync using ethernet Cat 5 cable.
