lost files on my PC... if I sync with iphone will it wipe all?

Long story short, if the phone thinks it is a new pc, it will wipe it. Backups are your responsibility I am afraid to say.

If the music on your iphone was purchased from the itunes store, itunes can move the purchased content from the iphone to the computer. Before connecting your iphone, click on edit > preferences. When the preferences opens up choose the iphone or syncing tab. Check the box to disable automatic syncing for all iphones.

Then make sure your computer is authorized for your itunes account by clicking on store at the top of itunes and choose authorize.

Now connect you iphone and choose file > Transfer purchases from "... iPhone."

This will transfer any purchased content from your iphone back into itunes.

if you dont have it backed up or you didnt buy it online, do a google search for a program to transfer your stuff off of it....it wont brick your phone

If your running Windows XP where can you locate the back up file to save it on a back up hard drive?

I am planning on reinstalling my OS on my VAIO and dont want to lose my info. I need to save it to my external hard drive before hand.

On a similar note, can I copy music files from my PC (XP Pro)? What I am trying to accomplish is sharing the music from iTunes on my PC with my wife to synch to her non-iPod/iPhone mp3 player (Samsung Blackjack).
