JScript runtime errors

I'm using OS 9.2.2 with Earthlink 5.1 and recently I've been getting several different JScript runtime errors;

Microsoft JScript runtime error
line:352
character: 1
error: out of memory

Microsoft JScript runtime error
line: 366
character: 20
error: object doesn't support this property or method

then several error: object expected

I've tried re-installing Internet Explorer, clearing my cache and re-installing JavaScript 2.2.5

Any ideas on what's going on and how I can remedy it would really be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I have already re-installed IE 5.1.7 and my memory is set at minimum 11000k and preferred 25000k. I turned off virtual memory then I restarted and while my Earthlink Homepage is loading I get the same JScript runtime error - out of memory, which comes up everytime my homepage loads but after I click yes or no it goes ahead and loads the homepage.

Is there anything else you know of that I could try? Is there any other Java runtime updates or patches I should install.

This problem just occurred out of nowhere one day a couple weeks ago, prior to that I hardly ever got JScript errors.

Nancy, did you install MRJ 2.2.6 which I linked in my previous post & rebuilt your desktop afterwards? If so, then try the following:

In IE Edit>Preferences, delet History, Empty Cache (if you have cable set Cache to 0).
Go into the system folder>preferences folder & trash the following preferences:
finder
ASLM
PPC Registration Database
Cache.waf-found inside the MS Internet Cache folder
MRJ Cache folder-a new one will be recreated.(If not found go to System folder>Application Support>MRJ Cache folder-trash all you find inside-( DO NOT TRASH THIS FOLDER)
Download Cache-found inside Explorer Folder
Downloads.html-found inside Explorer Folder
History.html-found inside Explorer Folder

Rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Use Techtool Lite or Trash*Desktop - may delete Finder comments to rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Does a better job than manually & you avoid all the finger gymnatics. You just have to hold down the shift key to shut off extensions.
Restart to turn the extensions back on again & empty the trash.

If you want to rebuild manually, see KB article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery.

If the above does not work, then dump the %#&*X@ & check out other Mac browsers

Bill Gates has dropped all support for the Mac version of Internet Explorer.

Good Luck

BB: I re-installed MRJ 2.2.6 then rebuilt the desktop, emptied the cache and trashed the pref. you listed the rebuilt the desktop again (manually) then emptied the trash and restarted.

I'm still getting the same JScript error: out of memory (and I increased pref. memory to 60000) whenever my startpage is loading but when I click no or yes it goes ahead and loads anyway and the news video works. On some websites the video sound comes on with no image and on other sites the video works fine. Aside from when my start page loads I seldom get a JScript "out of memory" error. The other errors are mostly "object expected" & "obj. doesn't support this property or method".

I went through extensions mngr. to review which ones are on/off and to turn off any I don't need, i.e. firewire, airport, and the ones for networking, multiple users, palm, game stuff and appleshare. For some reason, Iomega drive options will not stay checked and when I restart I get an error message saying that Iomega drive options will not move and to run disk first aid which I did and it said "all was o.k." with my HD.

I looked at the web site uou linked that had the other web browsers but most sounded like they weren't compatible with my OS or they were discontinued. I really am used to IE and up until now haven't had any problems with it....wish I could at least view all videos and virtual tours even if I had to click my way through error messages once in a while and while my start page loads (which I always get the out of memory error on).
I want to thank you for all your suggestions, I know it's hard to trouble shoot with out being able to physically look at my computer inards; system folder, HD, extensions, etc. But........if you have any more ideas, I'm willing to try them all. Let me know if you need any more particulars.

I have an old IE 4.5 and IE 5 along with some missing extensions in my hard drive folder, should I trash these or no? I'm always hesitant to throw stuff out when I'n not sure what will happen if I do and I wonder if a have folders/files in places where they shouldn't be...but everythings been working o.k. until this JScript problem.

Thanks again BB.

Labonza,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I increased preferred memory to 60000 and restarted but still get the JSCript error messg "out of memory" when my startpage loads, but when I click yes or no in the error screen it goes ahead and loads the startpage and all the features appear to be working.

The video even works on my start page but not on some other websites, just the sound (like there's not enough memory-but there is) I really need to be ablt to access video and virtual tour type video on websites like before.

Any more suggestions?? I'll try 'em all..

I'm having exactly the same problem. It just started a few weeks ago quite suddenly. Some pages now load slower than dial up and I have DSL. Some pages are loading quite strangely . Palmone.com is an example of a page that is almost unreadable after it loads. I have reloaded OS 9.2, quicktime, shockwave, and IE. I've about had it and am ready for a total upgrade.

I got rid of my old versions of IE but I do use an Iomega 250 Zip drive to back up files so I kept those extensions (except the problem with Iomega drive options where that extension won't stay checked at restart, I'll have to see what happens next time I use my Zip drive).

Soon as I get a chance, I'm going to check out the new browsers you suggested for OS9.2.2

I had downloaded Java 2.2.6 and was checking Sherlock to see where it's kept then I checked for 2.2.5, 2.2.4, on down but the only one I could locate on Sherlock was 2.2.6. I thought these were all updates to the 2.2.2 and would have to have them in my hard drive so that I could download the 2.2.6. How does that work?

I remember when I downloaded 2.2.6 I got an alert saying "You have a newer version of Svensk on your hardrive do you still want to install?" (and a bunch of other languages came up one at a time as I clicked "yes" each time to continue the install). Is there a 2.2.7?

Thanks for all your help BB.

Hi, Nancy -

Couple of things I haven't seen addressed yet...

Microsoft JScript runtime error

That would indicate it may be an issue with the Microsoft implementation of Java, rather than Apple's.

Make sure you have the browser set to use MRJ (Macintosh Runtime for Java). To check that, go into IE's Preferences, here - Preferences > Web Browser > Java - and make sure that the first item, "Enable Java (Apple MRJ)" has been checkmarked.

Also, try increasing the Preferred memory allocation for the helper app "Apple Applet Runner" - you may need to use Sherlock to find that item. Doubling the original Preferred amount should be sufficient.

Don,

The main JScript runtime error I've been having is when my startpage is loading I get:

line: 352
char: 1
error: out of memory

but, when I click yes or no it will go ahead and load the start page.

Just a moment ago though, I was looking at the contents of 2 folders on my hard drive I was going to trash...Internet Explorer 5 and Microsoft Internet 5. I found a recovery icon in the IE5 folder and ran it. Afterwards my start pgae loaded without the JScript runtime error....yessssssss!!!! BUT, when I go on websites that have a video and you can even indicate DSL, dial-up, or whatever and click to start it, it starts to load then a text file window appears full of greek type although the sound does work.....I was hoping this would be working as well, but no go.

Regarding the Applet runner; I found it but when I go to get info then memory, it shows the memory but there is no "field" (white box) where you can change the memory. It's currently set at :

suggested: 1024
min: 512
Preferred: 1024

I made sure the icon wasn't an alias and tried to get to the file several different ways but still could not adjust the memory, just see it. How did you get to yours??

Hi, Nancy -

Re the Apple Applet Runner, if you can see the Memory pane in Get Info, but can not change any of the items, then the program is either running, or it is locked. If it is locked, you should be able to unlock it in the General tab of Get Info, in the lower left.

BUT, when I go on websites that have a video and you can even indicate DSL, dial-up, or whatever and click to start it, it starts to load then a text file window appears full of greek type although the sound does work...

Can you tell what kind of video it is? Internet Explorer needs to use helper apps to display most videos, usually done via plugins for the program. Videos can be QuickTime, RealPlayer, Flash, or Windows Media Player - each of those is separate, and requires the necessary software to view them.

Sep 27, 2005 5:48 PM in response to Don Archibald

Don,

Applet was running and once I quit I was able to adjust the preferred meory to 2200. Thank you,

I don't really know how to tell what kind of media player a web site is using, but one of the sites said that you must have Windows Media Player 7 and I checked with Sherlock and I do have it. Still, when the video starts to load, a new browser window opens and at the very bottom it says "receiving text file" and then all this greek looking lettering fills the window and that's it, and, you can hear the sound for the video.

But my media players seem to be all in different folders and I don't see any of them in a plug-ins folder (I seem to have several, in different places as well). I wonder if some of my problems (and some I don't even know I have) are due to things being in the wrong place.

Is there any refernce or guide that yhou know of that tells you where your files and folders should be in OS9.2.2?? That would really be helpful to me since I'm not real clear on my iBook's or OS's inner workings.
