Using Canon ixus 75 with my Mac

For some reason known only to Canon, its recent cameras prevent the cards inside them from appearing on the Mac desktop when connected. iPhoto 4 and earlier can't do anything with movies, so you will, as you know, need to make your camera's memory card appear on the desktop in order to retrieve movies from it. Buying an inexpensive USB card reader is the solution until Canon smartens up. A reader allows you to connect the card directly to your Mac, thereby getting the camera out of your way.

I have the same problem. I tried to import the movies by inserting the memory card in an Ixus 50 but I got the same result: the mac doesn't recognize the AVI format of the movies. Looks like a bug in the Canon Ixus 75.

jsjs: If your problem is that you can't open your .avi movies after transferring them to the Mac, it's an entirely different problem from John's. If your problem is that you can't transfer them from your camera to your Mac, then you may have the same problem as John: an uncooperative Canon camera. In the latter case, my suggestion to you is the same one I offered to John: use a card reader instead of connecting the camera to the Mac.

iPhoto 4.0.3 and earlier can't handle movies at all; you need to use QuickTime or iMovie to open, view and manipulate them. I don't know anything about movies or movie file formats, and this isn't the best forum for questions about them.

Have you tried using Image Capture to collect those movie clips from your digital camera?
