Explorer Freezes Compter on NYT web page!

Quite reliably now Explorer (5.1.7) is freezing the computer whenever I try to open the New York Times web page. I get a blank screen with the desktop background color and everything freezes.

No reaction from the mouse, no force quit from the keyboard, etc. I can only make progress by pushing the reset button on the front of my G4.

This just started. Other sites (weather channel for example runs fine).

Any ideas? I've run Norton Utilities (no problems found), and rebuilt the desktop.

I should probably just upgrade to 10 and get a new version of Explorer? I've got a set of Panther disks awaiting an install when I have the nerve.

Thanks for any ideas

Hi Ken,

It sounds as if it may be a change in the site itself, preventing the use of older browsers.

For what its worth it loads fine under Explorer 5.2 running under Tiger, although it lacks the bells and whistles like an RSS capability that you get if you use a modern browser like Safari.

IE on the Mac is pretty much a dead end road these days. I only keep it for the handful of sites that demand IE. Safari is a much better browser for most purposes once you make the change to OSX.

One thing you might try before giving up on 5.1.7 is to delete your cache and history files within IE. Sometimes a bad cache file can cause problems with a particular site.

Cheers

Hello Ken,

For what it's worth, I've accessed the New York Times site with IE (5.1.7 on Mac OS 9.2.2) from both my Beige G3 and Sawtooth G4, and in fact gotten a nice little video presentation of a high quality that rather surprised me. I haven't the faintest clue as to what might be wrong, though, unless maybe your Mac is a closet conservative.

I run IE 5.1.7 on a G3 using OS 9.2.2 and this kind of thing doesn't surprise me. I think a lot of sites are now using features not supported by the old IE and they are causing it to crash. Unfortunately for OS 9 there isn't a lot out there. I've worked my way through a lot of the alternatives and not found anything that was really better. Most of them just crashed on other pages instead and froze the whole computer. At least when IE crashes it usually just takes out itself.

Some suggestions:

If others are finding IE to work with this page then maybe you need to up the memory allocated to IE. I think I have mine set to about 50 MB RAM. It needs lots of RAM.

I find that some sites that crash IE5 still work with Netscape 4.7.7 which I keep as an alternative browser for problematic sites.

The mystery of it all! Now things are working. I've done a few restarts while trying to diagnose the problem but there was no clear solution. Just all of a sudden NYT loads just fine.

I suspect I may be dealing with a system file "on the edge" or something, although Norton has not caught an error in ages. Same for Tech Tools.

I think I may install 10 on my second hard drive and use it as a startup (I've been resisting for a long time, even though I've got Panther disks on the shelf. It's all the secondary software that needs changing and updating which means agony and $$$) and then totally reload 9.2 on the other disk. (maybe even replace the disk).

Thanks for the comments. I think I'm out of the woods for now. I just wish I knew why.

I have been using Mozilla 1.3.1 on a Wallstreet PB running 9.2.2. I switched from IE5 over a year ago, because Mozilla is much faster. Lately, I am finding more and more sites that won't work with Mozilla, so I have to go back to IE5.1.7, which I hate because it is so slow. Occasionally I find a site that won't work with IE but will work with Mozilla. I think that someone is sending us some kind of message.

You can't fight city hall. Microsoft is no longer supporting that browser, so it will continue to lose function as time wears on. Try this: Go to <www.icab.de> and download the English version of iCab. iCab may work fine on that page, and you may find yourself using it as your default browser, as it runs pretty well and freezes less than IE on my classic 7500/100 which has been upgraded to OS 9.2.2 and a 500MHz G3 chip and about 500 MB of RAM.

Try this also: In IE, increase the memory allowance by at least 5000K. This sometimes helps in certain situations, as the browser sometimes can freeze if it runs out of memory.

Note: iCab works well on most sites, but may not support the plug-ins you have on IE such as Flashplayer, etc.., but most sites will work ok without the plug ins anyway. Also, iCab is a more secure browser than IE, and lets you configure cookies exactly the way you want to.
