Q: Apple Wireless Keyboard won't pair

My Apple wireless keyboard won't pair with my MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.1. Until a few hours ago, it's been working fine. It's an older keyboard (white). It also won't pair any longer with an iBook G4 running Leopard 10.5.1. I've tried most of the suggestions on the various discussion threads without success.

One unique finding I hope that will help someone find a solution: If I use Bluetooth asst and select keyboard, it will not find it. If however, I use 'any device' the keyboard is seen and named 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' but the type is listed as 'unknown'. This tells me that the keyboard is sending and the Mac is receiving, but something is missing in the identification. I've tried continuing with the Any Device option but the pairing is never successful. (I've tried all the various passkey options.)

Hopefully Apple will fix this soon!

MacBook Pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

    Hi ProfT-

    Which suggestions have you tried?

Have you tried fresh, name-brand alkaline batteries?

    Luck-

Solutions tried: PRAM, NVRAM reset, fresh name-brand batteries (verified their charge is full with a meter), no bluetooth devices on in the house besides the offending keyboard, reboots, deleted bluetooth plist, deleted all bluetooth devices from the preference pane, tried adding back via assistant and via pref. pane, and as mentioned above, when the computer does see the keyboard as 'any device' I've tried all the passkey options and none of them will allow me to pair the keyboard.

Do you hit the return key after entering your numbers?

Yes. I've tried both Return and Enter when working through the pairing process. Neither is successful.

    (Bump)

After the latest MBP update the issue still remains. The Bluetooth assistant can see the keyboard under 'any device' but the type is unknown and it will not pair. The keyboard cannot be seen if 'keyboard' is selected in the set up dialogue.

Hello! I've got exactly the same problem with an iMac G5 Rev A (10.5.1) : the Bluetooth assistant can see the keyboard under 'any device' but the type is unknown and it will not pair. The keyboard cannot be seen if 'keyboard' is selected in the set up dialogue.

I tried everything (as did ProfT), even reset of SMU. I read a lot of posts and discussions about this problem: many users have this problem, and there's no solution at the moment...

I have exactly the same problem. The white keyboard does not connect with my two macs running leopard. The bluetooth type is 'unknown'.

It seems this is a Leopard issue. My kb worked fine with both my laptops until leopard. None of the updates to Leopard has helped so far. Judging from the leopard discussion topics there are many bluetooth issues beyond this one.

Yep, same for me. Irritatingly, my wireless keyboard has been working fine for a few weeks but just failed to work today. Stupidly I deleted the pairing and tried to set it up again but it didn't accept.

I have no solutions, just add me to the list. Oddly, mine was working fine with Leopard and then abruptly stopped.
My keyboard can't be seen with "any devices" though.
My plan: 1-800- SOS-APPL when they are in

Like both of you, my kb did not die immediately with Leopard. I probably had two good weeks of working time, then it stopped on day and I haven't been able to get it to pair since then. I'd be very curious to see what Apple tells you.

    Hi

I have the exact same problem .. with 10.4.11 - so it's not a Leopard only issue.

The only difference is that it's bluetooth-type is 'Device' instead of 'Unknown'. I've also tested the keyboard with my MacBook running Leopard. This one also shows it as 'Unknown' - still doesn't work.

So - it must be that the keyboard corrupted itself, or an software update from Apple is messing things up.

add me to the list of people with a breakdown between wireless keyboard (also a couple of years old -- the white one) and leopard. was working fine until this afternoon. fresh batteries are in. get as far as the passkey request but no further.

I hope someone has a solution!
