OS 9.2.2 Error Code +23005

Hello Everybody

I am having problems with crashes, programs I am unable to open and disappeared files. I am trying to fix this with Norton Disk Doctor. But while checking directories at some point the program always stops with either the following message: "Node xyz, record abc, no parent directory found for lmn. The Catalog B-tree is a data structure which keeps track of where files are stored on your disk. (10,6,28)." Or it stops with the message: "Norton Disk Doctor has come upon an unexpected problem and I unable to continue scanning the disk. Error found: 230005. Please try examining the disk again." But no matter how many times I try the same thing happens. I do start from the CD. I cannnot start without the CD anymore, first I have the smiling Mac, then it disappears and a folder with a blinking question mark shows up.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Hi, Adultress -

Ron is suggesting that Norton's Disk Doctor has caused damage in trying to fix something it can not. It would not be the first time for that to have happened.

He has also suggested that you can fix the problem by re-initializing the drive using the zero-all-data option.
Using Drive Setup

Note that re-initializing the drive erases it completely, so before doing so back up any data you don't want to lose.

Be sure to select Mac OS Extended as the format, when asked.

Another possible solution would be to acquire Alsoft's DiskWarrior - it usually has no problem fixing disk directory problems such as Catalog BTree errors, although it can take it longer to do so after Norton has tangled with the drive.

The current versions of DiskWarrior, v. 3.x, boot only to OSX. If you have not updated the firmware on that iBook ( Article #75128 - iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7) then it would not be a good idea to use DiskWarrior 3.x or any other disk which boots to OSX. Instead, look on eBay for DiskWarrior v. 2.1.1 or 2.1 - those boot to versions of OS 9.
