No Iphoto library Folder in "Pictures"

I was trying to put some pix onto an external hard drive, usually to have the items go into my external hard drive in an organized fashion I can't go straight from the app. ie: to get whole albums into my hard drive as albums, not a bunch of individual songs, I have to go to the library under "Music" in the finder.
My iphoto library in "Pictures" comes up as the iphoto library icon, not a folder containing albums. When I click on it, it just opens iphoto.
The albums in iphoto are not allowed to be moved to the hard drive.
Another seemingly related prob is that when I want to put a photo onto....well..... lets say my myspace page, I don't ever get the option to get the photo from the iphoto library, i have to drag it to the desktop and access it from there.
Is there a preference or setting I'm missing that puts the iphoto library in "Folder"(blue "folder" icon) form?
Every time i search for iphoto library hoping to see a blue folder containing albums, i always get the app. icon.
Any input?

Albums in iPhoto are virtual entities, there is no corresponding folder of images on the HD. This is how a pic can be in 1, 100 or 100 albums with no wasted disc space.

There is never any reason for you to surf the Library folder. To access pic files try any of these:

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.

1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.

2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.

This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS

If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.

If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS

Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

And many sites include an exporter plug-in for iPhoto, so check and see if one is available.

Thanks guys,
I hear what you're saying, but here's the thing, when I go to add a photo to myspace, the menu drops down, but the iphoto library is inaccessable. I can't browse the library. on every other mac Ive had I could. I just think there's supposed to be a iphoto folder in "Pictures" like there is a itunes folder in "Music".
since there isn't one, and I cant access the Iphoto library from any browsing window (email attachment browser window, Myspace, etc), I'm guessing something is not in the right place or something.
Is anyone getting what I'm trying to get at here?
Thanks

Do you?

Yes, and now with iPhoto v7 that's changed. So that's why, in the post above I say:

So, everything is in the right place.

i'm usually of the mind that if you dont like something about an apple product, it's not an "apple problem" it's a "you problem"

But the iPhoto 08 Library issue is a little upsetting. if they have to use clever programming tricks to make the album to picture correlation limitless, fine, but use more cleverness to allow access to the iphoto library through finder.

the quick fix for this is to store all your photos in another folder or on an external drive and then go into the iphoto settings and tell it not to make copies of the photos for the iphoto library. this will leave them where they are and allow you access when you want to upload them to sites like myspace or photobucket.

though, that doesnt help you if you use iphoto to get pictures off of your camera. (ie an iPhone) you could use the ******** step child of iPhoto, Image Capture, to get pictures off of your device, but if you've used Image Capture you know how awful that is.

I would guess that this is some small, angry person's idea to reduce the number of tech support calls that apple gets from people who accidentally move or delete iphoto library images. Hopefully, the greater good will prevail and Apple will eventually unlock the library in the hopes that someday, people who want to use computers will take a few minutes out of their day to learn how to do so properly.

This is a fix? Further, have you considered the implications of trying to migrate your library to an new machine? Have a search of the forum, many folks have had problems doing just that with referenced libraries.

though, that doesnt help you if you use iphoto to get pictures off of your camera.

Well, if you tell iPhoto not to manage the files, what did you expect? It's you choice, either you manage the files or it does. You can't have it both ways.

Of course, it's not actually a problem at all.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:

For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.

Other options include:

I realise that you've been comfortable using the previous hack - hack? Yes hack: Accessing the pics via the Finder has never been a recommended way of doing things right back to iPhoto 1. Check the documentation. It always says that there are no User accessible parts there. I also realise that change is difficult, but all of the above methods - some of which don't even require iPhoto to be running - are much much faster than surfing through the endless folders of the iPhoto Library Folder. All of them.

i like when recommended practices stay that way. forcing all users to copy a file or install a separate program to do something that they should be able to do brings words like fascism to mind. even if its a little, obscurely worded checkbox like "manually manage photos" i would be happy.

i really like the iphoto interface and it does a great job of pulling images off of devices, but i really dont like limitations and redundant copies of files. i doubt we'll have to worry about it in the future though, since i would imagine that photographer, gps, album, rating, and many other tags will make their way into the metadata of pictures and they will literally organize themselves regardless of the folder they're in or the computer they're on.

and i never would have thought that finding a file in finder would be called a hack. that was very entertaining.

Hilarious.

Fascism? Can you spell Over-Reaction? How about twaddle?

You are not forced to copy the files to the iPhoto Library Folder, you have a choice, but that choice has different effects. But you still have the choice. My point was simple - it's not a fix for a problem that doesn't exist.

but i really dont like... redundant copies of files

By this I assume you mean version control? That iPhoto preserves the Original file? Then why on earth are you using iPhoto? Go use an app that doesn't do that?

and i never would have thought that finding a file in finder would be called a hack. that was very entertaining.

Yes, it would be entertaining if that was what I said. But guess what, finding and accessing are not the same thing.

But remember, you can access the files via the finder id you want to. It's very simple. Right Click on the iPhoto Library icon and choose 'Show Package Contents'. Or is that too much of a change to deal with?

But like I said, any of the solutions above are faster, much faster than surfing the iPhoto Library via the Finder.
