Lagging in Photo Booth

There's a short delay in the picture display when I take a video in Photo Booth. It's especially noticeable when speaking -- my lips don't sync up with my voice. I also notice the delay when the camera is on and I just move my hand. The picture on the screen is less than a second behind my movements. This isn't normal, is it?

I've tried rebooting, but that did not help. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Does this help? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4969807&#4969807

Because you use Mac OS X (10.5.1), if you follow the suggestions in the link above, you need not use the part of the OS X Maintenance link there that deals with "(3) Forcing the Chrons." Your OS handles chrons for you even if you do not keep your Mac awake 24 hours a day.  Forcing the Chrons only applies to versions Mac OS X earlier than 10.5 (Leopard.)

You're welcome, RNobleman.

I did not intend for my response to indicate that your processor was being overworked, but rather that some apps make automatic decision based on processor capacity. Capacity can be effected by several things that you can influence, including your processors power, System Preferences settings, how may apps you use simultaneously, the complexity of the running apps, etc.

Perhaps you are right about programming quality. You may want to try some of the other apps that can capture video clips to see if they work differently, too. Because iMovie works better for you than Photo Booth, the concern about which you posted may merely be due to differences in the way various apps are written. That would seem even more likely if some of the other video clip apps also work better than Photo Booth.

As another test, you should be able to play back any of the clips you record with any of these app by opening them in QuickTime Player. If they play back with less delay that you see in the monitor window, it would see to me that Photo Booth (or other app) has been optimized for recording rather than for monitoring the camera image. If the playback delay is not objectionable, ignore the slight lag in the monitor window unless it is too bothersome for your taste. In that case, use some app other than Photo Booth to record video. If you want another app that offers video "effects", you could also try WebcamTweaker to see if it exhibits less lag on your Mac than Photo Booth.

In my own test with Photo Booth vs iMovie and QuickTime7 Pro, Photo Booth does seem to have slighlty more lag during recording, but all played back without any real problem for me. Nevertheless, I never use Photo Booth for any serious video recording. I use QT Pro or iMovie for recording video when I want their better quality recording or editing capability.

One other thought: iSight switches to 15 frames-per-second to improve picture quality in low-light conditions, so you might want to consider a test recording in sunlight or with additional good-quality light to see whether better lighting helps reduce the lag you notice in Photo Booth.

One more thought RNobleman

On your laptop Mac, you can also check your System Preferences... > Energy Saver settings, including to be sure your processor is not being slowed down to extend battery life when operating on battery only.

Thanks for your quick reply.

The link you included references pixilation or black boxes on the screen. I'm not seeing that in either iMovie or Photo Booth. The picture is very clear, but it's delayed. Sound and picture are not in sync like in those old Japanese Godzilla movies.

Are you saying that this is caused by the processor being overworked? I don't hear the fan at all -- which is normally the signal that the processor is being taxed. Plus, I have 2 gb of memory which isn't bad.

Since I don't see the delay in movies recorded with iMovie, but I do see it in Photo Booth, isn't it likely that it's an application-specific problem? Perhaps Photo Booth isn't programmed as well as iMovie?

Both iMovie and Photo Booth show about the same delay in monitoring. The difference occurs in recording. I took two clips using both programs under the same lighting conditions. I played both back in Quicktime. The iMovie clip was smooth; the Photo Booth clip was out of sync and kind of jerky. It looks like Photo Booth is not capturing as many frames per second as iMovie is. This doesn't really both me though, since I can do my recording in iMovie easily enough.

Thanks for your help!

I got same kind of probleme but easier to solve (I think).
Conditions :
-Applications open : Finder / Photobooth
-Processor prefs : Maximum
-No background deamons running
Probleme : When I record a video in PhotoBooth on a backdrop, i look the video once recorded and it really lags, i don't see all pics. What can I do ?

It's a bran new MacBook 2,2 Ghz that I had for Christmas.
