External partitions disappeared.

I know there are a few topics with similar problems, but either they didn't give out the full details of the situation, or my case has slight differences that made me start a new thread. Here it goes:

I've been operating in a Macbook Pro 2.16 Ghz for about six months now. I have been using an USB external drive from Western Digital with 500GB space with no problems. In it, there's a partition in GUID filesystem from where I sometimes boot Tiger (besides a Time Machine backup partition).

I had no problem using this drive until now, when it stopped showing up in the desktop, finder, or anywhere else, even though I can see it'slight blinking and I can hear it working. Besides that, it crashes my disk utility, which is what I find the strangest, so I can't even repair it (this is, if there's something wrong with it). All this booting from the internal disk, where Leopard is installed.

So, out of despair, and because I thought there was something wrong with Leopard, I installed Tiger back on the internal drive, and the same thing happened.

To make sure it was not a problem in my hard drive, I decided to boot from it (where Tiger is installed as well) and it went great. But still I can't do much with the disk utility. Sometimes it crashes, and sometimes it gets stuck on a cycle I will now describe: I verified my external HDD and the Time Machine Backup Partition had some errors, which I immediately corrected. The thing is, after repairing, is checks the partition again, finds the same problems, and starts repairing again, never getting out of this cycle.

Other than that, my internal drive has a 15 GB windows XP partition, made with boot camp. Don't know if it is relevant but it's never too much to detail the situation.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Update:

Back on Leopard (my internal disk), I managed to scan the external partitions with disk utility, and they eventually showed up, although it took some repeated verifying and repairing.
The Time Machine backup partition was normal and I could restore some files. But the other partition, where I keep Tiger installed, although it appeared on the desktop and finder, it seemed empty - no files are showed anywhere.

I can still boot from Tiger on that partition and all the files are there, though.

I restarted the system and, again, the external partitions are invisible.

UPDATE of the update: I'm sorry to be adding posts to fast, but both my external partitions (Tiger and Time Machine) appeared out of nowhere right when I posted, I don't know why.

Everything seems normal, besides. All the files are there.
But if you some knowledge on this situation I'd still like to hear it, since I have the feeling it's not over yet (even if it is, it still takes some 15 minutes for them to show, and always with the warning that "Disks aren't repairable").

Thank you

The same just happened to me. I have an external firewire 800 drive (1TB) and after using my aircon too much in this cold weather, my fuse jumped out and after that my external drive disappeared.
I am trying first aid right now and the only thing that happens is:

First Aid Failed:

Disk Utility stopped verifying “LaCie” because the following error was encountered:

Filesystem verify or repair failed.

I am sure all mny data is still somewhere on this drive, but how to get it? Can you describe in more detail what you did?

Thanks a lot!
