Logic sounds into Band In a Box

Anyhow - I'd love to know how to get Logic sounds to work withing BIAB.

Found this thread on the internet:

Does this thread sound right? I downloaded the guy's Logic file - can't get it to work. I don't understand the Environment well enough.

2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac, 4 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.4.9), 2.0 GHz MacBook Pro Core Duo, 1.5 GB RAM 2 Ext. HD's (250 & 300 Gig)

I didn't try the setup he listed. It looks valid, enviroment is a bit overwhelming, most people shy away for it. BIAB is a great tool, but the Mac version is way behind the PC version. In fact I have found the Mac version of BIAB to be fairly buggy, but does an amazing job of helping you to quickly get a song into a 'shape'. I never got the BIAB copy into paste buffer to work. I did a simple work around

I just create a Logic setup with the instruments, in the same order as BIAB saves them.

In BIAB do "export as midi". then open up Logic, and drag that midi file onto the arrange page. It plays fine. I will often create several versions of the song in BIAB, using different styles, then in Logic, I will use different sections of one instrument, with different styles, the piano maybe a jazz style, the bass a hiphop style, guitar, a folk etc.

It is a wonderful way to get the skeleton of a song going. You can BIAB to finetune the chord progression, try a transpose etc, I will then go back in, and mute the BIAB bass for example, and play my own

Aha! I was trying to get this working the other day, but didn't know about the 'Multiplayer Recording' feature. I figured something like that had to be there. Without that option set, whatever instrument track I selected in Logic just simultaneously played the notes for all instruments being generated by BIAB. Drums on the piano, bass on the piano, guitar on the piano, etc...

Thanks a lot.

Misterioso:

All you need to do is follow the instructions on the 37Hz blog post through Step 4. For each track you set up, make sure you set the MIDI channel (in the Track Parameter box in the Inspector) to match the corresponding channel in the BIAB MIDI setup.

Then forget about all that Environment stuff.

Follow Fred B's suggestion to enable Multiplayer Recording in Logic: Switch on the File > Project Settings > Recording > “Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording” option.

Then click the "R" button on each Logic track so that it glows red.

If it all goes correctly, you should be able to play a BIAB song and hear the instruments you selected in Logic.

Only problem I had was that this pushed the CPU pretty hard -- evidently a common issue when you use software instruments in Live Mode. I was getting dropouts and clicks. I solved this by switching from EXS instruments on each track to corresponding GarageBand instruments, which use less CPU power. Still sounds a lot better than the QuickTime instruments you are normally stuck with in BIAB.

Easier than it sounds. Give it a try. Good luck.
