display screen malfunctioning

The display on my second generation iPod nano is malfunctioning. It is lit, the battery is charged but I cannot read the display. It can best be described as appearing like old TVs where the "vertical hold" was not working. It looks sort of like a blinking or scrolling bar code. The problem began after being recharged in my iPod dock. I have tried the five R's to no avail. What is wrong and how can it be fixed?

Add my 2nd Gen. to this list. Screen just went completely grey. Still able to play music, hook it up to I Tunes. etc. I did a full restore after backing up all my files. This jump started the I pod and the screen came back, so I know that it still works. Re-loaded some songs, disconnected it from my computer, good to go, right? Not so fast, this is Apple we are talking about here. As soon as I turned it off and went to re-start it, bang, grey screen. ***?
Did another restore. Same result. Screen worked, turn if off, grey. Still plays music in the headphones though. I had to memorize how many clicks of the wheel to get me to the right menu to start playing songs. Unreal. I bought this thing 18 months ago. Now I'm just waiting for the battery to crap out so I can go and buy another company's product. It's an awesome product when it works, but by the looks of all these threads on here, it seems like it doesn't work too well for too long. They aren't cheap either, as we all know. I was always amazed at how many of these things this company sells. Now I'm beginning to realize that all those purchasers can't be new customers. It's people buying another one to replace the one that died on them. LOL. I don't think I'll be joining that group anytime soon. Rant off.....
If anybody has an idea on what to do, please post. I think we are beat on this one though.

Oh wow. I can relate to the trouble you're having. My display has a thick black line through the top of it, and the screen freezes every so often. It's quite annoying and it's not worth the heartache for how much money this little thing cost.
I did call Apple and they let me know that repair would only cost $130. Very comforting, knowing that other people are having similar problems.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this black line?

It looks like the only way to get this issue resolved is to return the unit for another one or go a different route altogether. The only reason I went with an I Pod was to take advantage of the Nike + running kit, which is awesome. Otherwise I would have bought another company's product because I always heard that I Pods had a poor long term track record for reliability. I plan on heading down to the Apple store to see what they can do for me. Being that the unit still functions, I don't think I'll be springing for a $100 dollar repair when a new 3rd gen. only costs $149. This is where Apple gets ya. "It doesn't really pay to get this one fixed, just buy a brand new one for almost the same money". I can hear it now. Another I Pod sold. LOL

Same problem here!
blue lines, no way to reset it. my guarantee just ran out 3 weeks ago.
this is my second apple product, the first being a Macbook Pro, which had to be fixed several times (2x mainboard, 2x IO board, 2x display, on/off switch!!!).
everything was within warranty, however, soon after the optical drive did not work anymore, no warranty!
Apple does not even answer any request, NEVER AGAIN I WILL BUY ANY APPLE PRODUCT.

Hit the Apple store today, where I bought my Product Red 4GB Nano 2G back in Nov. 2006.
I had to make an appointment for a tech at the "Genius Bar" (whatever)to give it a look-see. Come back in 2 hours. LOL O.K. I return to have these 2 options presented to me in regard to what I now call the "Apple white screen of death"
1)Get a refurbished 2G. Cost:$99. Cost of a brand new in the box 3G-$149. Hmm.... what's the better option here?
2)Trade in the 2G, which gets "recycled" in Apple speak,(read-Refurbished and re-sold for $99.) and get a 10% discount off a new 3G. Huh? I give you my working $199 2G (except for the screen of course) and get $15 off a new one? Trade $199 for $15 off. How about I keep my I Pod and you give me the discount. "Nah, we can't do that," I'm told. Wow. O.K. see ya.
I have a bid in right now at an online auction site for a refurbished 8 gig for 75 bucks. Looks like I'll be getting that. I won't be spending any more cash on Apple products. Talk about over-rated and over-priced gear.
