I find it hard to believe that a hard disk in a computer as young as Mac Pro critically failed. Have you tried asking in the Mac Pro or Mac OS X forums? or have you already cleared / replaced the hard disk?
Uhm, you aren't helping with my question. But the long answer is that I dropped the hard drive (I had removed it to upgrade in size and stupidly didn't back everything up)
The photos on your iPod touch have been compressed to fit onto the screen, If you had Mail on your iPod Touch like an iPhone does you could at least email yourself the smaller pictures. As for the Touch not having Email you cannot do that at this time. Depending on the importance of the photos you can choose to wait for the SDK (software development kit) for iPhone and iPod Touch in February when someone might make an application to transfer photos from the devices to computers. There is a slight chance someone will make an application like that, so there is no guarantee.
Here's the deal. Of all the years I've done computer support - Mac support in particular - I've seen maybe 10 drives crash/die.

MY perspective, what most of these posts represent is someone who got music from another person on their iPod, only to realize if they sync it, the stolen music is gone.
You spend enough time here and a pattern emerges.

So...your story, while possible, sounds fishy. A Mac Pro and you dropped the hard drive? And the biggest issue you have is getting photos off of the iPod?

But, in case you've been misread, I will say that the software I've used to get music files off the iPod does not get photos or videos off.
Since the Touch does not do "disk mode" I'm not sure what to say to you.
It is possible that Apple might enable this in the future, but I know nothing about that.
There may be utilities that can get the data you want, but my experiences only cover getting music files off.
I agree with you on that. To have a Mac Pro with photos that are not backed up some way makes you wonder. Also that is good that you have seen about 10 HDs crash because that would not be too good if more had. I did have a problem with my HD though, a random 30GB disappeared over night with no explanation, it baffled the Apple support people. It ended up in my having to erase and reinstall OS X onto it which wiped out all my info on it. luckily I backed up everything I needed onto my 60GB iPod and restored it all.
I agree with all of you drives should have a great life. But, the person that asked the question said he dropped the drive. If you do that it certainly can break.
Back to the question, you as sunk until some writes an application to take files off the IPT. I would just hang in there and see what happens in the next months with 3rd party software.
I physically took the harddrive out of my macbook pro and swapped it for a larger hard drive. Stupidly did not do a backup at that time, so I lost about 3 months of data. I then dropped the old/original harddrive. ie it suffered a physical damage crash from a drop, not a manufacturing problem etc....so as Bobbbo stated, yes if you DROP a hard dive it can break. It is at a data recovery firm and they are NOT having any luck with it. The pics are the only thing on the ipod that I didn't have backed up elsewhere. Other files that I lost aren't on the ipod, so I am only asking about the pics. Thanks Bobbbo, I will just be patient and see what happens but the point about the pics being compressed is well taken. I realize I won't get the original files back, but SOMETHING is better than nothing.

Anyway, it is possible that Apple will change the missing "disk mode" in the future, or another app may come about to get photos off of it.

thankfully I haven't done anything that stupid with the stuff on the mac pro. All mac household. imac for kids, macbook pro for me, and mac pro for the home office.

Just don't auto-sync the wrong way with your Touch, or you'll lose the photos for good.
The bad news is the photos on the Touch are going to be smaller, low-res versions of the original, but better than nothing.
I'm in a similar boat. I thought HD failures were more common but you guys make it sound like a highly unusual event? Its my first crash, but my macbook (1.5 yrs old) crashed. I took it to an authorized mac dealer, and the tech told me nothing on the drive was recoverable. It didnt even register on his disk scan software. I backed everything up as of about 1 month ago, but the photos taken since then until the HD cratered are lost. However they are on my ipod touch. I realise they are now lower res, but I would like them back nonetheless. I guess I wait for SDK?
Hard drive failures happen all the time.
They seem to happen every day here.
The reason (only speaking for myself) I am highly skeptical is that if my whole world was on a hard drive, and I had no backup, the last place I'd be is here worrying about my iPod.
Also, the iPod is the vehicle used by most younger folks to "borrow" music, hence Apple makes it mostly one-way.
Not that it doesn't happen, it's just that I'm not going to help anyone steal music.

Everyone should purchase some 3rd party software and external drive to backup their files automatically daily. Hard drives can fail on their own and sometimes power supplies fail and burnout the drives. In any case when you loose one it is really painful. I personally have lost 4 drives over time and will never get caught without a backup. Actually I double back up my data every night. I back it up to one drive in my computer and one drive outside my computer.
I would never use a iPod for a backup medium, even if you could.
I was in a similar situation where I needed to copy photos from an iPod touch to my PC. Tried a few software tools for iPod but none of them worked.
However, when I installed the trial version of Tansee iPhone Transfer Photo, this software managed to recognise the iPod touch as an iPhone and managed to get the first 6 photos back onto my computer (free trial version only allowed me to copy that many).
