AntiVirus???

Hi, I just bought a Macbook and received it today!!! So happy!!! Hehe!!!

Anyway I know Apple Macs aren't suppose to get viruses but do I need an anti virus to be on the safe side???

I have a PC and for that I downloaded AVG anti virus which works great for windows but I don't think it works for Apple Macs???

Do you think I need an anti virus??? I would feel safer with it and what anti virus are you using (if at all) and what one would you recommend???

Any help is appreciated!!!

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5)

ClamXav is a very good program. I use it for downloading files for wifes PC. Macs don't have a problem with viruses, yet!

I also would suggest Little Snitch. It is a good for knowing what is dialing out on your computer. A lot of software phones home without you knowing it. I prfer to know who my Mac is sending info to and this helps control it.

It's also good to have antivirus software if you are going to be sharing files with Windows users. For example... you may want to work on a Word document that someone has sent you at home... and then bring it in to work to do more edits on a PC or send to someone on a PC. While you, the Mac user, would never have a problem... it's possible that the original file that you received from a PC user contained a virus. Now... when you pass that file on to other PC users, they can become infected as well. It's not so much to protect yourself in this case as it is to protect others.

Good morning,

 *Welcome to the Apple Discussions Forum* 

At current there are NO confirmed viruses for the Mac OS X Platform and thus it is considered by most (myself included) that at this time Anti-virus software is a simple waste of resources.

In the event that you are still paranoid regarding catching a virus, please consider that with Mac OS X you cannot be infected with a virus like you can on Microsoft Windows.

If that doesn't put your mind at ease, there is a free software Application called [ClamXAV|http://www.clamxav.com> based on the Unix ClamAV Antivirus that can be used as yet another layer of protection.

Hope this helps! 
