MacBook Pro 15" battery dies at 90%

I am currently living in Japan, and I have a MacBook Pro 15". When the computer is not plugged in, and it is on battery it dies without warning. Right before it dies it says on the top bar that the battery is 85 to 90%. After it dies I look at the battery and press the button and 4 out of 5 lights come on. It is like the battery has charge but the computer does not recognizes it. What should I do?

There is another thread going on about this under spontaneous shut down. Mine's doing this as well but usually not till it gets to 60-65%. It just recently started. Not sure whether it has any thing to do with Leopard but it didn't do it before.

In the other thread several got new batteries which seems to have corrected the issue. Even though my battery was not one of the ones included in the recall it does seem like there are a bunch of defective batteries. Mine only has 130 cycles on it.

Most of the threads on this section of the forum (batteries/power) are about this problem, or a variation of it. Orange/Green light flashing, spontaneous shutdown (mine just did this at 30%), rapidly declining battery life and not waking from sleep. I haven't moved up to Leopard yet and all of these symptoms just started happening to me within the last week. I think Apple's going to have to do something about this- there are so many people having the same problem.

I'm in the same boat, I have yet to move up to Leopard and my battery is in rapid decline; right now it registers at 27%, although it has been both lower and slightly higher than this within days. It is shutting off without warning with increasing frequency in the past few days.

I suppose it could be the cycles in my case - close to 400, I use it heavily when on the go. (Although I'm not entirely sure what is considered a cycle: is it every time it is fully charged, declines, and then is charged again, even if it isn't fully discharged in between?) But it is still extremely frustrating; perhaps more so since I'm guessing due to my cycles I can't get a replacement from Apple. (I already had my original replaced because it was one of the defective ones.)

Given the volume of complaints, one would think that Apple would be actively trying to solve the problem, and it would seem that the replacement program is one step toward that. But for those of us who might not qualify and are wondering whether it is worth spending $129 on a new battery every six to eight months, this isn't of much solace.
