PS3 wireless network setup connection timeout, how to open ports?

I just got my Sony PS3, and spent my first couple of hours with it struggling with the wireless network setup.

The 'Scan' option finds our Airport Extreme network and lists it as using WPA-PSK (which now I look, is what I've got in my Airport setup).

It prompts for a WPA Key, which I'm hoping means the password (min 8 characters etc), then I choose 'Easy' address settings, Auto for everything, and Test Connection fails with 'The connection to the access point has timed out.' I'm wondering if the clue is that it's a timeout rather than a password rejection etc. I found this advice on the PS3 site:

+If you are unable to connect to the PlayStation Network you may need to open some ports on your router or modem. A 'port' is a type of connection that can be used by programs and computers to exchange data.+

+The most common of these are TCP and UDP ports which are used to exchange data between computers and the Internet.+

+In order to use some games and features on PlayStation Network the following ports should be opened:+

+TCP: 80, 443, 5223, and Port Range 10070 - 10080+

+UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658, and 10070+

+For more information on how to open ports, please refer to the manual that accompanied the device or contact the manufacturer.+

So, I'm thinking the port-opening thing could be worth a shot. However, all I can find in the Airport Admin Utility is port mapping, in terms of Public Port/Private Address/Private Port. I don't really know how that works. I hit the Help button and it gives me a page about the other kind of port (the physical plug socket, not the drink or the seafaring industrial zone). How do you "open" ports using Airport Extreme "port mapping"? Is there an equivalent of the firewall log, so I could see actual requests and denials and get some more clues?

All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance...

To setup Port Mapping:
Assign a static IP to the PS3
o Refer to your PS3's Owner Manual on how to assign a static IP address to the PS3. <choose an IP address outside of the AEBS's DHCP range: 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200>
o Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
o Router: 10.0.1.1
o DNS Servers <your ISP DNS server IPs>

Setup Port Mapping on the AEBS
To setup port mapping on an AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or, temporarily, connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to change these settings:

Port Mapping tab
o Click "Add"
o Public Port: <enter the Port # which will be accessed from the Internet; note the AEBS does not distinguish between TCP or UDP ports, both port types will be opened >
o Private Address: <enter the static IP address you set up for the PS3>
o Private Port: <either enter the same value as the Public port or the value you want your application/service to answer on>
o Click "Ok"
o Repeat the last series of steps for each port you wish to map.

Many thanks for the tip. I'm afraid the port mapping thing turned out to be a red herring, but it's good to know how to do it anyway.

I tried disabling the security just to see if it was a security issue. It didn't work, and it also wiped out the base station's IP/DNS settings and I lost my Internet connection (oops).

I put the security setting back to WPA, typed the settings back in (luckily I had a note of them), the Internet connection came back up and the PS3 connected. Success!

I think perhaps I had some sort of settings corruption and that was why it wasn't connecting earlier, and changing the security level triggered some internal refresh. Possibly there is a more reliable way to investigate this, but I'm happy that it works now anyway.
