I found the following comments on Amazon:
+iSeries Rules says:+
+Ok, so I took the time to talk to Sony (2 hours on the phone) and Apple (1 hour on the phone) about this.+
+Sony tell me that the iPod classic has the same specifications for the connection port as the iPod 5th gen Video. So, they believe that the problem is in the iPod classic's firmware. They did say that they were going to get their engineer's to look at connecting a classic up to see why it is not working.+
+So, the Apple story. Apple looked at this and said that the classic's video out was slightly different than the 5th gen. But, after looking at it a little more closely, and looking at some of the products that Apple sell for similar functionality (video out to TV/Receiver), they then started to feel that there may be an issue with the hardware/firmware. They also indicated that they had received reports of the classic working with similar products, and then failing to work after a recent firmware upgrade.+
+Apple also indicated that they would contact their engineers regarding the connection to the Sony Digital Media port, and give reasons as to why it is not working, and whether there is some way to make it work.+
+I should hear back within the next few days (given that tomorrow is friday, it may be early next week).+
+Hopefully this matter will be resolved by a firmware update.+
+What was really dissapointing was I plugged in my friends 5th gen, and it worked a charm. So it can work...+
