How do I open a file that ends with nrg extension?

I am trying to open a file which ends with the extension nrg.
Each time I try to open the file I get a msg which asks me to choose the application to open it. I have tried using Adobe PDF and Go Live. I have no idea what a nrg file is never mind which application opens it!

Could anyone please come to my rescue and help me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Helen

.NRG is actually a .ISO with a different name. I've done over a dozen experiments taking .NRG files, renaming them to .ISO and burning them with every other windows burning app I could get my hands on.

Try it.

Thank you everyone for you suggestions, great of you all.
It really had me stummped but turns out that the nrg file which I was given was just the name of the file that opened the CD burning program after all. I wrongly thought it was a file which contained some data for printing.

Anyway , I now understand a little more of nrg files!

Thank you for your help Henry B. very kind of you to reply.
I downloaded a trail copy of the Nero software on to my PC. (Lucky for me that I have two different systems). However the software still doesn't actually view the file as it is CD burning software and I cannot see an option to view a file. Unless I have downloaded the wrong program.

Would you know if there are any MAC based programs which could open the file?

Once again, thanks for your help anyway, most appreciated.

Thanks Henry, I will just wait until the end of the week when I will meet the person who gave me the file in the first place. Its a little complicated to explain. I was given a CD rom which is supposed to contain some files for printing out a project. The file I want won't open since this is the nrg file I am talking about. I suspect the person who gave it too me is using some specialized program to run it. Its difficult to ask them direct as they are Chinese and I am sure they will not understand the problem, its just too lengthy to explain to them on the phone. My solution will be to take my laptop along and show them it won't open.

Practical solutions are sometimes best!

Thanks for your kind help though, I will let you know if it opened.
Its probably not worth opening anyway but I like the challenge 🙂

Helen.
