Mounting and reading FAT32 windows-compatible external HD

I am trying to mount and read a Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive which we believe is FAT32 formatted. It contains iTunes music & playlist that we want to read off the hard drive using my iBook connected to a mixing desk.

The issue: although my Mac recognizes that the drive is there (says it is read/write) and it can be seen in the Disk Utility function, the drive does not mount on the desktop and a message appears saying the files are unreadable. We are connected via firewire.

The music has been backed-up to a Windows XP computer but because of the quantity we need to use an external hard drive not the network. Any ideas as everywhere I see in discussions says that Mac OS X should read a FAT32 formatted hard drive.

Thanks. Caroline
