Visual Voicemail on international roaming

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question regarding visual voicemail access and , more specifically, what are you charged for when internationally roaming?

Are you charged only for listening to the messages or does the iPhone automatically download them?

The reason i ask is that I want to be sure when roaming that I'm not incurring excess data fees. Actually i want none at all and plan to turn of international data roaming. However, does this mean I should turn off visual voicemail too? It's unclear to me at what point the iPhone downloads the message. I'm guessing the fact that the iPhone displays that you have a message means it's already downloaded?

Thanks for any input with this 🙂

The iPhone will automatically download the messages (providing you have Data Roaming On in Settings). This will incur international roaming data charges.

Should Data Roaming be turned off you will have to dial into voice mail manually and listen to them the old fashion way; the messages will not be downloaded.

They are pushed to the iPhone after a message is left and you can't incur any data download fees for a visual voicemail download when roaming internationally unless someone leaves you a voicemail and data roaming must be turned on for this to occur or to access the internet or incur any data charges.

You should leave data roaming off unless you actually need it for checking email or for internet access other than when connected via Wi-Fi.

Does the iphone periodically check for messages or are they "pushed" to the phone once the message is left. I'm just wondering whether I'll incur fees for the data even when I have no messages.

If they're pushed to the phone I don't mind leaving the roaming on as it's unlikely I'll receive many voice mails.... generally i don't as all my contacts dislike leaving messages 😟

Thanks for all the information 🙂
