So in Disk Utility for SMART status it says "Not Supported"? No worries man, I have 2 hard drive that say that too. One is brand new and the other is not all that new. There are no ways that I know of that can do checks on it other then Verifying and Repairing the disk. You can check out Disk Warrior. I have never personally used it, but I hear great things. It is mainly used to repair file system damage, so I am not sure if it can check other things like SMART, but might be worth a look.
to my knowledge, there aren't any external hard drives that support S.M.A.R.T. verification.
S.M.A.R.T. verification isn't really a reliable indicator that you're drive is or has failed. Having witnessed 4 hard drive failures on internal drives in my time, I can tell you, S.M.A.R.T. status wasn't able to predict any of those failures. Basically, S.M.A.R.T. status isn't that smart at all.
