HELP!! can't open docs saved from mac on my pc (dell)

I have a mac at work and a dell at home. i recently got a USB flash drive and backed up all of my work info onto it but it my dell won't open it. however, it works the other way around (info saved from my dell can be opened by my mac). any ideas on how to make this work? please make your responses in very simple terms as i am fairly computer illiterate. thanks!!

Make sure that your mac has saved the files with the extensions. Example: On a mac you can save a jpg file as "name" without the .jpg at the end. However, a PC needs that .jpg to know what type of file. The older versions of some mac software do not put the extensions. You can manually rename the files with the extensions on them and then the PC should be able to read your files.

Example2 : jpg= .jpg tif=.tif word doc= .doc
