I've been happily using my system (see details; by the way, I'm at the latest
Security Update and System levels for Tiger) for about a year, no problems;
Usually connect (dhcp) via airport, sometimes BT-modem. Half the time, Open
wireless networks, sometimes WPA Personal. Then, about a week ago, while trying
to use this Open wireless network that I often use, it just plain would no longer
join that network. (All other network situtations worked fine, just not @ this
particular access point.) I got good signal strength, but the bugger just
refused to join. Using command-line "airport" utility, from the
Apple80211.framework (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks), I will always get
the error code 88001012 from WirelessAssociate. Man, that is frustrating!!
Nothing interesting in the system logfiles, combed the system for funny stuff;
I tried everything I knew, including wiping out preference files, removing
system cache files, rebuilding kernel extension caches, clearing PRAM, NVRAM,
different network modes, all kinds of playing with the Network Preferences
TCP/IP settings (in System Preferences), switching DHCP/BOOTP / manual settings
modes, etc. Tried KisMac drivers; Nothing was curing the problem.
Tonight I finally tried some other command-line stuff, like what was suggested
above — the
/usr/sbin/ipconfig command. Just goofing around, I turned on
the setverbose (1) setting. Switched the en1 mode to BOOTP, back to DHCP, back
and forth. Looked at the
/var/log/com.apple.IPConfiguration.bootp file, a bunch
of times.
Out of the blue, I was able to Join the network finally. Wow, this was weird.
Normally this SSID is called "linksys"; for some reason, this time it comes up
and Associates with name "linksys
OW19881" !!!!??? Huh? But it was working!
A short time later, the darned thing went back to normal (SSID "linksys"), I
think I had to re-associate (join) but that's not unusual.
Well, tonight, the darned thing has been working like it always was. Another
weird thing I'm seeing now (it never did this before) is that when I go into
the Network dialog of System Preferences, and check Network Status, it says —
"AirPort is connected to the network linksys. AirPort does not have an IP
address and cannot connect to the Internet." Which isn't true!! (Yeah I'm connected
to the network, and I am also using the Internet as usual, which means http,
email, ssh, etc.!)
BTW here's my ifconfig en1 output right now ... (everything works okay)
en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.1.102 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255

There was another relevant discussion thread on here, look at this one —
(Title is, "Wireless suddenly stopped working ..." Here's the key quote
which attracted me there: "Using 'airport -A' to attempt to connect to the network gives an error: Error (88001012) associating to SSID.")

I was gonna Reply on that thread, but they say it's Archived and they
don't let me reply to it;
Well, THANKS A LOT!! Regards, Larry.
