All networkinterfaces inactive

Hi,

i am using an iMac5,1 with neuest 10.4.11 update. Since my last reboot
i can not get any network access. Usually i use wireless, but the interface is always inactive. My networksettings are all ok. I reinstalled the 10.4.11 update, but it did not help.

After cleaning all my networksettings and reimplementing them, i tried to bring the interfaces up by using ifconfig. But this also does not help.

I only need to activate the wireless network but just for information i also tried ethernet and it did not getting activated, too.

I am confirm to unix/linux systems, but i am quiet new to MacOSX. So maybe you have some suggestions for me.

I have other linux devices on the wireless network which work very well and also my MacOSX worked well until the last reboot.

I am not sure, but maybe with the last reboot the new 10.4.11 update was going "online". Usually i do not switch my MacOSX off so i am not sure if i rebooted after last update.

What do i mean with "inactive". If i do ifconfig in the console behint the interface en0 and en1 i have always media inactive.

When i trying to connect to my wireless lan with the graphical netwrk administration tool i get in system.log and error WirelessAssociate2() = 88001012 for network IceLand. Association attempt timed out.

To check if the update to 10.4.11 is the reason is there any way to remove this update ?

Thank you for your shelp and suggestions,

regards,

Andy

Hi Andy, and welcome to the Discussions!

Apple should make people more aware of this, but you need to repair Permissions with Disk Utility before and after any update, and reboot if many are changed. If there are many, or sifnificant ones, it may also ay to reinstall the latest big Combo Update for your machine... after a reboot.

Look in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations, and the Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON. Networking choices will proceed down from there. May require trashing this file if changes don't stick between boots...

/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkConfig.plist

You can just move them to the desktop for later putting back if you need.

Please let us know...

Hi BDAqua,

i am sorry to say, but the problem still occurs.

1. I repaired the permissions
2. reboot
3. updated with the 10.4.11Combo Intel update.
4. Repaired the permissions again.
5. reboot
6. Tried to connect to my WLAN which failed
7. Removed all those files you listed
8. Reboot
9. Set up the AirPort configuration manuelly
10. reboot
11. Tried to connect to my WLAN which failed

I removed startup for my tun and tap driver which i use for the openVPN.
I thought maybe there is an incompatibility to the update. But it still not works.

So right now i have no idea where i shall look for so i am posting my specifications maybe you have an idea where else to look. Some of the labels are in german if something is unclear i will translate everything but therefor that the values are copied from Mac Sytem Profiler the most of them are selfexplaining.

What also maybe interessting i have Xcode 2.3 and the Apple SDK installed.

Thank you for your previous help.

Brgds, Andy

Do you have your Mac set up to get any account info from an external server on your local network?

I find this thread interesting...

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5845092

Might try moving all startupitems to desktop, then reboot.

To make sure there are no strange kernel extensions left do this terminal command:

kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Any SCSI cards btw?

Dec 19, 2007 10:19 PM in response to BDAqua

hi,

I do not use any extern authentification or something like that. I removed all startup items, but it did not help and lso the kernel modules which are loaded are only com.apple modules. I added the list at the end of the message.

What i tried tonight is to rebuild the complete wireless network. I tried WEP,WPA with different keys/keywords on my linux machines everything was working fine, but the Mac can't connect to network.

So i changed back to my origin network configuration and removed the networkconfiguration from the mac. I removed every information about my network and used the network assistant to add a new internet connection. Surprisingly the network assistant automatically offered my network "IceLand" to me. When i choose IceLand the assistent asks me for a password. I am putting in my WEP HEX Key and getting always wrong password.

I wonder now how the mac knew my network. Means that, that the OS found the network, but has only authentification problems ? This is the opposite to the message "Could not find IceLand on any channel" in the system.log. Maybe there is still a networkconfiguration which i did not remove.

Is there any way to check the networkinterface. Maybe it is a hardware problem ?

Is it possible to start the network by hand to have more debug information ? Maybe without the GUI.

Thanks alot

Brgds, Andy

I've been happily using my system (see details; by the way, I'm at the latest
Security Update and System levels for Tiger) for about a year, no problems;
Usually connect (dhcp) via airport, sometimes BT-modem. Half the time, Open
wireless networks, sometimes WPA Personal. Then, about a week ago, while trying
to use this Open wireless network that I often use, it just plain would no longer
join that network. (All other network situtations worked fine, just not @ this
particular access point.) I got good signal strength, but the bugger just
refused to join. Using command-line "airport" utility, from the
Apple80211.framework (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks), I will always get
the error code 88001012 from WirelessAssociate. Man, that is frustrating!!
Nothing interesting in the system logfiles, combed the system for funny stuff;

I tried everything I knew, including wiping out preference files, removing
system cache files, rebuilding kernel extension caches, clearing PRAM, NVRAM,
different network modes, all kinds of playing with the Network Preferences
TCP/IP settings (in System Preferences), switching DHCP/BOOTP / manual settings
modes, etc. Tried KisMac drivers; Nothing was curing the problem.

Tonight I finally tried some other command-line stuff, like what was suggested
above — the /usr/sbin/ipconfig command. Just goofing around, I turned on
the setverbose (1) setting. Switched the en1 mode to BOOTP, back to DHCP, back
and forth. Looked at the /var/log/com.apple.IPConfiguration.bootp file, a bunch
of times.
Out of the blue, I was able to Join the network finally. Wow, this was weird.
Normally this SSID is called "linksys"; for some reason, this time it comes up
and Associates with name "linksys OW19881" !!!!??? Huh? But it was working!
A short time later, the darned thing went back to normal (SSID "linksys"), I
think I had to re-associate (join) but that's not unusual.

Well, tonight, the darned thing has been working like it always was. Another
weird thing I'm seeing now (it never did this before) is that when I go into
the Network dialog of System Preferences, and check Network Status, it says —
"AirPort is connected to the network linksys. AirPort does not have an IP
address and cannot connect to the Internet." Which isn't true!! (Yeah I'm connected
to the network, and I am also using the Internet as usual, which means http,
email, ssh, etc.!)

BTW here's my ifconfig en1 output right now ... (everything works okay)
en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.1.102 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
ether 00:0d:93:ef:9b:d5
media: autoselect status: active
supported media: autoselect

There was another relevant discussion thread on here, look at this one —
(Title is, "Wireless suddenly stopped working ..." Here's the key quote
which attracted me there: "Using 'airport -A' to attempt to connect to the network gives an error: Error (88001012) associating to SSID.")

I was gonna Reply on that thread, but they say it's Archived and they
don't let me reply to it;

Well, THANKS A LOT!! Regards, Larry.

Thanks a lot for your reply. It's great to hear a supportive comment.
I'm frustrated now, because the exact same problem came back, in the
environment of the exact same SSID. Since last night.

No matter what I'm trying now, I haven't been able to clear the problem this
time around. There was one kind of funny thing ... I ran KisMac r239 and one
time it showed me two SSIDs that said linksys ... one was generating packets,
and the other wasn't. When I ask the airport command-line utility to scan for
available networks, I never see more than one.

What bugs me is that I can't clear the problem using that ipconfig trick (telling
it BOOTP, then back to DHCP ...) tried +ifconfig en1 down+ and up as well.
Reboots, turning Airport transmitter power off ... on ... nothing seems to fix it.

That error code (88001012) is the other bizarre symptom ... no one ever explained
more about this condition. I wish we could figure out some properties that could be
played with, in the Airport driver's IORegistry ... then perhaps the "--property" option
of the airport command-line utility could be utilized. If I figure out the trick, I'll try
to post back here again. Larry

Yup, yup, yup... Airport gets mighty confused with 2 or more of the same SSID, KisMac may work, but I find 3rd party Wifi and drivers far better, see my 2 links here...

Larry, you should post back, but in a new thread... we've thread-jacked the OP enough now! 🙂

OK, thanks BDAqua.
I'll stop posting here ... am reading the "+Duplicate SSID different MAC addresses+"
thread that you suggested.
Also, I ran /usr/sbin/ioreg on both the pci80211@12 and AirPortPCI_MM devices;
maybe if I get desperate, I just might be able to fiddle with some properties there.

If the problem here is just duplicate SSID names, then I thought that I'd be able to Join the
correct one, using KisMac or even iStumbler . But I've not been successful thus far.
And, I can't use a later KisMac trunk package, since they began to require Leopard (10.5),
I'm not up to there yet.

I forgot to mention — When this problem is happening, the peculiar symptom I see in iStumbler
is that the access point (SSID) shows very good signal strength, but the strip chart readings are
only drawn in Orange ... normally, those would be two-toned i.e. orange against grey (the orange
being a bit higher; I think that's something like signal over noise, meaning orange is the data level
and grey is the noise level.) So now, I just get an orange signal graph on the chart. ???????????

The AirPortPCI_MM looks like it just might have a couple of useful properties ... but
I think I was probably barking up the wrong tree anyway. Larry
