Q: I can't read .avi files on my ibook

I have a bunch of .avi files on my ibook, but i do not have any program to read or convert them to, say, mpeg format. i am wondering if any programs exist and where i could find them. i would prefer to convert them, but i'll settle for at least being able to have them read. thanks.

Quick Time should be able to read some of them, depends on the encoding.I agree to the suggestion of VLC,it's really good.

Avi is purely a container for a video file and is not really a format in its own right.

If you have the right codec then the file should play in Quicktime.

One often used codec is DivX
