dumb question: so, WHY the odd headphone jack?

I'm sure this may have been asked a million times, but I used the search forums and didn't see an answer:
WHY does the iPhone have the oddball jack? For a while I assumed it was "because it needed to support a mic in" but then I read some people getting results just by trimming down a regular headphone jack so it fits in there.

So why did Apple do that? Just to be jerks? So people don't get mixed up and start using "normal" iPod earbuds? Because of the ****** GSM interference issue?

You're NOT LIMITED to the headphones you can use.

Just get the Shure Music Phone Adapter

http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Accessories/CasesAdapters/uspa_MPA_phoneadapter

I get to use my Shure E2c's with my iPhone.

And to those you act like Apple is forcing you to buy all this stuff. Since when did you lose your right to spend your money the way you want? meaning who "Forced" you to buy a iphone?

jenLondon,

With the Shure adaptor the microphone will end up lower on your body so you'll have to pick it up to speak into it.

It comes with a clip so you can clip the microphone to your clothes at an appropriate level for speaking, but because the microphone is built into the headphone jack you'll end up with the bulk of the headphone plug and microphone/jack clipped to your shirt.

It's even more messy if your using Shure headphones with the wire coming out of the jack at a right angle.

I mostly use mine at the gym, so it's no big deal. But it is a bit less elegant than the stock Apple headphones and microphone.

every one is jumping to the "o apple wanted to make more money" yet they didnt make an adapter them selves for it, wouldnt that be the one thing you would not license out to let people make or at least to be sold saying it is for iphones if you wanted to make money?

ya the small hole is a pain but if you look at your phone and imagine it with a larger hole it wouldn't work, it is a little weird that the ipods have the jack up to the edge and the iphone doesnt but then again im not an electrical engineer and seeing as that apple has made all their ipods to accept any other head set i think there has to be a good reason.

about the stock earbuds being that bad, im not a huge fans of ear buds and they dont fit well in my ears no matter the brand but first off if you are commuting and want a head set to listen to music i for 2-3 hours a day i would expect you would go buy some top dollar head phones more than likely with noise cancelers so that extra 2 bucks for the little adapter is a drop in the bucket.

The answer is simple and well known... it was to keep the design slim.

From two interviews with Apple marketing VP Greg Joswiak:

+"The only way to accommodate the full variety of headphones would be to make the \[iphone\] thicker, or change its contours. And you know we don't like to do things like that."+

and

+“The jack is recessed in order to maintain the integrity of that design,”+ That is, "if they had wanted the jack to not be recessed, the phone would have had to be thicker at that point, and they weren’t willing to compromise the shape — specifically the thinness — of the design."

I don't buy it for a millisecond!

Apple could have easily mounted the jack flush to the case.
It's their way if making sure (until the adapters came along) of buying only Apply earbuds.

Me, I modded a set of earbuds & like better than the Apple buds, done.

I would never complain or criticize my Iphone for I love it for what it is. My ears look and feel normal to me but for the life of me, I cannot keep those little ear buds in my ears unless I sit very still. I was not able to use the ear buds with my Ipod either so bought a pair that fits around the top of my ears. With those, I can jog and still keep them in.

Just to play Devil's advocate, to everyone saying the earbuds provided with the iphone are free, consider this: If you were to lose/damage you earbuds and you walked into an Apple store and demanded another free pair of earbuds, would they give them to you?

If they were defective they would replace them free of charge
