Using Ipod USB with Iphone Charger

Hi,

I went to charge my iphone tonight and it seems that my chair may have been pressing against the end of the usb that plugs into my ipod (don't ask).
So, I can plug in the one end of the usb into the iPhone charger (which is plugged into the wall), but the end that goes into my iPhone will not go in my phone. I have an old usb cable that came with my ipod mini, and I know that the watts are different when it comes to older ipod ADAPTORS in comparison with the iPhone, but do the usb cords themselves have different wattages or would it only be the adaptor part?

In other words.. i'm trying to figure out if it is safe to use the ipod's usb to connect to the iPhone power adaptor and into my iPhone..

Thanks!

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Hello fizzyrox,

I charge my iPhone using my iPod 5G's USB cord and it is OK; assuming the bit that connects to the iPod is the same for mini as for the 5G there is no reason why it won't work. I've never owned a mini so I don't know, but as far as I"m aware the dock connectors are the same.

What matters in terms of wattage is the device the USB cord is plugging into, not the cord itself. If it mattered, they would have to print the wattage info on the USB cord.

As long as the cable you plan to use is a 30 pin, to USB cable you can use it in the iPhone. I use my 1G iPod Nano cable with my iPhone dock and it works perfectly. I make sure though, to only use the supplied power brick that came with the phone. I was told by an Apple Genius that the older bricks might put out too much watts.

No, it is not bad. All USB jacks provide the same voltage, 5 V +-0.5 V. It's a worldwide standard. So if you use a USB cable and plug it into any USB socket you are safe. That socket can be on a computer, an iPod wall wart, or any other USB spec'd device.

The questionable area is 3rd party devices that have a 30 pin connector but are not USB, like sound docks, car cables, etc. For these you should only use ones that say they are compatible with the iPhone.

There is no regulation in the dock; it is just a convenience so you can drop the phone into it rather than having to connect the cable to the phone. It also breaks out line audio and video.

There is no need for power regulation, as all USB connectors supply the same power (the world over), whether from a computer, an Apple cube, or anyone else's USB charger.
