iPod freezes wtartup when plugged in

So,
I recently started having the problem of the iMac freezing on startup when my 30gig iPod is plugged in; well it freezes every other time it boots. The Mac stays at the grey screen before the apple logo and the spinning gear. I know it's the iPod b/c when I disconnect it, the computer resumes startup.

We have another iMac with the same setup and the same iPod was plugged into it and it started up fine. I know the solution i to not plugin the iPod, but why is it that the other iMac is fine and mine not?

I have run hardware tests, FSCK, Pram rests and even disconnected everything plugged into the iMac and waited 15sec before plugging it all back in and booting up. Same thing.

Any thoughts? Thanks a lot

This is not a solution but a response that I am having the same issue.

Only...it's with any external hard drive that's plugged in at start up including my ipod.

It's a pain to have to disconnect my ipod or external hard drive if I'm doing a simple restart.

Hi Joe and kcdude

Your iMac is not sure where to boot from with the iPod connected. Go to: "System Preferences / Startup Disk" and be sure the "Mac OS X 10.5.. on Macintosh HD" is selected, then lock the preference to prevent further changes. Some say that didn't solve there booting issue with the iPod connected, but it won't hurt to check.

A couple of other options:
1. only sleep the iMac when the iPod is charging!
2. pick-up a wall charger for the iPod.

My problem only started a few weeks ago. I was getting the blue screen at startup and the after speaking w/ Apple care and reinstalling Tiger and Leopard, I started to get the issue with this ipod causing the startup to freeze. I recently bought an external HD and I have that plugged in, but the issue started before I got the external. I'm hoping it's a software issue and not hardware.

Good thought. I tried that but no luck,

But the same iPod plugged into another iMac (same specs as mine) and the mac boots up fine. crazy Hu?
