Imovie crashes on startup

imovie crashes on startup, and the only way I can use idvd on my brand new imac is to open files using the version on my G5! If I copy iDVD from the G5 to the imac, it crashes on start up - I tried the same thing with iMovie, but it won't work that way - because it crashes on the G5 too! I can only use iMovie HD on the G5....thank goodness Apple let the previous version remain useable or I'd be screwed.

(I purchased ilife08 from Apple which I installed on the G5, and the imac came with it pre-installed).

How can I get imovie and Idvd working properly on my imac!??!? This is a brand new machine which makes this even more frustrating.

I've tried removing the preference files from the imac, but it makes no difference at all, and I have the latest versions of imovie and idvd.

I also have a potential new client coming over later this week to view an imovie project and I'll have to lean past the new imac to show him on the old G5 - not very impressive.

(I'll talk about my dislike for the new imovie later - I much much prefer ImovieHD anyway. I know Apple says the web's the way to go, but I need DVDs and good quality DVDs too - the web's not fast enough to play dvds here and won't be for a long time.)

imac 24", 2.8ghz extreme, 4gb ram, 750 internal hd, 500gb external, Mac OS X (10.5.1), G5/dual 2ghz/10.4, G4/dual 867mhz/10.4, ibook/933mhz/10.38, ipod touch/16gb

Try trashing the imovie preference files and doing a permissions repair.

Quit iMovie.
Locate a file named com.apple.iMovie.plist and get rid of it. iMovie will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permissions repair from the Disk Utility folder.

The files are located here:

Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist

Kevin:

I will be keeping an eye on your thread. You are not alone, I have been having the same problem with imovie08....I feel like I am on a pc sometimes!

Last week I had a father and son (who I am doing a college highlight film for) come over to help with some editing, and imovie crashed on start up at least 20 times. AT LEAST 20, before I called it quits and told them we would work on it another time. I felt bad. I thought.. "Man this is not a good advertisement for Apple" after I had been raving about how wonderful it was!!!

Good luck....Thanks for the help everyone!

Hey Gang, I was having the same problem and did all the suggested items suggested in previous replies. I am sure the Divx caused the original problem but even after deleting them and doing the other tweaks, still no dice. Then I stumbled across a mention of an update, ver7.1, for Imovie 08. It now works perfectly!!
Hope this helps
Merry Christmas!!!
