create text file listing files in a folder?
Is there a simple way to create a text file of all the files in the current folder I'm viewing in the finder?

I have exactly the same request, and the need arises all the time. Ideally, I could open certain applications from a pull-down menu activated, say, by right-clicking in a folder. The application would start normally, but its default save directory would be the directory in which I clicked, rather than the most recent directory used by that application.
Oops -- I see that my request is distinct from the original question. What I want is to be able to open an application, e.g. textedit from "within" a folder, not to create a list of the folders contents...
Stephan - your post pointed me to this solution in the comments at that site. I hate to install 3rd party software unless I have to.

In Finder, select the files you want to "list." Hit Copy.
Go to TextEdit, switch to plain text mode, and hit Paste. Voilà!

Piece of cake in terminal
Do a ls -a > listing.txt from the terminal to get a list of all the files (including hidden files).
Or ls -al > listing.txt to get a "long" listing (including file sizes, etc.)
If you don't want to show the hidden files (specifically those that start with a .) then do ls -l or ls instead.
