Duplicate artists appearing on my ipod

I'm getting the same artist appearing five times under my ipod Artist menu. Whichever one of these I select I get the same identical full catalogue of tunes for that given artist that I have stored on my ipod. I've reinstalled itunes, I've restored my ipod but nothing sorts this problem. I've also tried deleting the relevant tracks from itunes and then adding them again but this does not resolve the issue. Has anybody else experienced this phenomena? It only happened for the first time yesterday and is a bit mysterious.

You need to make sure the artist name is spelt in an identical manner on every track. Even an extra space at the end of the name that you might not notice can make a difference. Try this even if everything looks the same. Sort your iTunes library by artist to bring your tracks together. Click on the first track by your artist, hold down the shift key and click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes and then the Info tab. Overtype the artist name then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical. Once you've done this connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the changes.

Thanks but I've already done all of the above. Besides, if there was a spelling variation or blank spaces I would get some of the tracks under one spelling heading and some under another. I'm getting the same artist appearing five times each with the FULL set of associated tracks for that artist. They are all complete identical duplicates of one another. There are obviously no duplicates in my itunes library. I don't think it's a syncing issue as I've never had this problem before. I'm pretty sure based on sync times that there are not actually five copies of each tune on my ipod for the given artist, I just think the itunes menu is showing five. Looks like a bug/glitch.

PS I've tried adding the tracks to my itunes library one at a time to see if there are certain mp3s causing the problem. One mp3 immediately caused a triplication to appear on my itunes artist menu! Having added all the tracks to itunes and with everything synced, when I delete this same mp3 file I still have the artist duplicated five times. Weird. I should point out that some of my mp3s are off Japanese music sites. I presume there is no difference in mp3 encoding that might cause problems?

Just to double check, go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".

This brings up the multiple song info window. If you see the "artist" field is left blank, then there is a discrepancy with that name.

If the above is not the issue, try this also. Highlight all the songs for that artist, right click on them and select "apply sort field/same artist".

See if that works.
